Lodge a missing creature alert with your Member of Parliament

Missing_Creature_Report__600px_web.jpg

Palm cockatoos are pretty incredible birds.

To woo lady palm cockatoos, males make drumsticks from branches and seed pods and beat their own rhythms while whooping and flapping their wings. Their rosy cheeks glow vibrant red when they’re excited.

But bulldozers are making them vulnerable to extinction. This cannot go on.

Will you lodge a missing creature alert with your local Member of Parliament? Tell them we need strong national environment laws to protect the places and wildlife we love – and ask them to raise this with their party leader.

Fill out the webform with your name and why you care. We'll print your name and message on a special missing creature alert and post it to your local MP. If you prefer, you can print and post it yourself.

Today is World Environment Day – a day for all people to stand up for nature. These creatures are all important members of our community of living things. And they all need strong environment laws to protect them.
We need laws that will stop companies destroying their habitat. Laws that will compel decision makers to make decisions that help, not harm, our living world. Laws that will give these creatures a voice.

The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated, said Mahatma Gandhi. Australia can gain greatness by treating its indigenous creatures with compassion instead of using profits to justify the means.

We are not the only inhabitants of this planet. We are not allowed to act in short sight for fast gain. If the Palm Cockatoos go, what’s next? Each link gone breaks the chain further and further. Stop now.

We need alternative sustainable energy sources, not oil and gas. If you destroy our biodiversity and its habitat, you also destroy human habitat as all animals depend on these ecosystems.

Please do not let my generation be the one who knew and did nothing about it. All wildlife have a role to play in the ecosystem. We have a duty of care to protect their environment.

Dear Member of Parliament ,

Biodiversity is its biggest decline since the extinction of the dinosaurs, yet it is absolutely required for finding of new medicines, clean water supply, and resilient crop breeding. Sanctuaries and National Parks also benefit tourism and sustainable supply of wild species e.g. for fishery and forest revegetation.

Please support the important roles of sanctuaries and National Parks for conservation to ensure that we can ensure that future generations can enjoy these essential ecosystem services.

Best regards
Peter

Gerald Durrell put it like this: “The world is as delicate and as complicated as a spider’s web. If you touch one thread you send shudders running through all the other threads. We’re not just touching a thread, we’re tearing great holes in it.” Every species has its place. We need strong national environment laws to protect places and wildlife and, ultimately, ourselves. And who wouoldn’t miss such a character as this bird?
