As summer bears down on eastern Australia, people are looking for ways to keep cool – and native animals are feeling the heat too.

Distressed wildlife injured by bushfires, heatwaves, floods and storms have become an all-too-familiar sight during recent summers.

Most of us want to help, but many people are unsure what to do when faced with a heat-stressed possum or an injured bird.

A new pocket-sized guide, How to be a wildlife hero, distributed free by the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), gives useful advice on how to help native animals and birds get through heatwaves, bushfires, floods and storms.

The guide provides tips on how to help:

  • Urban wildlife
  • Birds and animals hurt after a bushfire
  • Heat-stressed animals
  • Wildlife injured following heavy rain or flooding.

“Whether you’re out bushwalking, at home in the garden or out on the balcony, this pocket-sized guide will give you some key tips on how to help wildlife in need,” said ACF’s nature campaign manager, Basha Stasak.

“It contains handy information to help you understand why animals may be behaving strangely and gives advice on what to do in an emergency and how to care for wildlife around you,” she said.
