Lodge a missing creature alert with your Member of Parliament

Missing_Creature_Report__600px_SwiftParrot.jpg

Swift parrots breed in the nesting hollows in big old trees in Tasmania, then fly north in winter. In search of nectar, they cross Bass Strait in small groups. When there’s lots of eucalyptus flowers, they congregate in huge colourful flocks – but in dry years they have to travel far and wide.

Habitat destruction means the fastest parrot in the world is on a rapid path to extinction.

Will you lodge a missing creature alert with your local Member of Parliament? Tell them we need strong national environment laws to protect the places and wildlife we love – and ask them to raise this with their party leader.

Fill out the webform with your name and why you care. We'll print your name and message on a special missing creature alert and post it to your local MP. If you prefer, you can print and post it yourself.

We need stronger environmental laws to prevent wide scale clearing that destroys habitat for many Australian species.

With current levels of active destruction of old and new growth habitat across the nation and the globe, the threats of extinction to both plant and animal species are reaching critical mass. Our shocking history(since Captain Cook) of species extinctions is a global embarrassment, to further exacerbate this ignominy is a diabolical legacy for future generations of which the current parliament must take full and unequivocal responsibility for their abject failure to protect our unique wildlife and their environments. The policies of the past that saw little responsibility for the environment must be completely overhauled. The environmental incursions by mining and plastics, land-clearing and agri-chemicals have placed many unwelcome problems on native habitat from water loss/pollution/toxification to soil and food quality degradation. To continue to pursue these disastrous policies can only create a wasteland for future generations. It is urgent that the governments of Australia commit to quality restoration of Australia’s environment for the future sustainability of the nation, and to finally recognise the great importance of quality water-systems protection. Water is our most vital asset, to jeopardise its drinkability a treacherous betrayal.

I am a keen bird watcher but I have yet to see a swift parrot & fear I never will. They breed in hollows of old (more than 100 years old) trees in Tasmania then migrate to NSW each year. Their numbers have crashed so much that they are classified as critical endangered under federal legislation (EPBC Act) yet their habitat in Tasmania is STILL BEING LOGGED because Regional Forest Agreements overrule the EPBC Act.
It is the fastest parrot in the world, on a rapid trajectory towards extinction unless urgent action is taken to protect it.

We need stronger environmental laws to save critically endangered animals such as the Swift Parrot.

When a species becomes extinct, It effects our environment in some way. That in turn effects something else and so on and so on. Like a pack of cards, one falls and they all start to fall.
If you want a world for your grandchildren to live in then we all need to work together to nurture our environment today, for a world for tomorrow.

This needs to stop. How are animals becoming extinct in this day and age.
Disgusting

So much time and research effort is being undertaken to help this endearing species. Surely it is our guardianship responsibility to protect wildlife, fauna and their habitat. Please do not let more extinctions to occur due to apathy. Take action now to legislate for strong environmental laws to protect what is left. Extinction is forever. Thank you for your your considered attention and action.

Australia has such wonderful wild life which we should all be trying to protect. Habitat destruction is one of the main reasons that many of our wildlife are now threatened. Please raise this with your party leader and request that we have stronger environmental laws to protect our wild life.

We need stronger environmental laws to protect beautiful native Australian animals. Please make sure that our laws protect our native fauna and flora from endangerment, extinction, and destruction.

To protect these species before they disappear forever!
It’s not enough to only have them in zoos. We want to see them in the wild.
Let’s spend our money on protection, rather than having to spend countless millions later on trying to undo the damage.

Can you tell me where to find a Swift Parrot?

Swift Parrots are a critically endangered nomadic migratory bird found only in south-eastern Australia. Their small population of less than 2,000 birds is continuing to decline largely due to loss of habitat in both their breeding range and non-breeding range in south-eastern mainland Australia.

Due to the diligence and good will of scientists from ANU – and donors such as myself – we are attempting to save the Swift Parrot. Did you know that ANU researchers had to resort to crowdfunding to raise a tiny amount of money to begin to attempt to save the critically endangered Orange-Bellied Parrot – Australia’s most threatened bird? Crowdfunding?? Does that sound right to you???

Where is Government support? AWOL. It’s not enough. It’s not enough by any measure.

Australia has over 1,900 species and ecological communities listed as threatened under national law. The Swift Parrot is but one.

Australia leads the world on extinction. How many species will become extinct on your watch as a Member of Parliament? How will you answer for it?

If we allow the continued destruction of critical habitat resulting in the extinction of so many species we will be the disgrace of the future. We will go down in history as the generation that failed to coexist peacefully and respectfully with our natural environment and, in our greed and disregard for consequence, denied our fellow inhabitants their right to exist
Helen 2018-06-06 13:07:27 +1000
We need strong environment laws to save this parrot from extinction. The Turnbull Government doesn’t care, so it’s up to Labor to fight to save these parrots and to include this fight in the campaign for the next election.

Politicians & greedy industry have STILL not figured it out… Nature is a fine balance & every element is necessary. Don’t you people have children & grandchildren for heaven’s sake???

Please will you add your voice to those seeking to protect this amazing bird. Its breading grounds in Tasmania need added protection as do its feeding grounds in southern mainland forests,

When I hear about any of our wildlife being near extinction, I wonder what we as humans are good for. It is the responsibility of all of us including our Government to protect all of our wildlife in Australia. So I ask that you protect our native creatures not the corporations and exploitation of our resources.

The time is now to put an end to habitat destruction in the name of the economy. Humans are not the only species on this planet and they do not have the right or the need to destroy the environment of all other species.
Politicians enacting laws to save the environment are, unfortunately, the only hope we and all the other creatures of this planet have, so do something you can be proud of and help.
