Coles and Woolworths both claim they’re doing good things for our climate.
So why are these supermarkets both card-carrying members of one of Australia’s shadiest climate-wrecking lobby groups: the Business Council of Australia (BCA)? It just doesn't check out.
Over the past few decades the BCA has strategically undermined a long list of climate policies in Australia. As a result, climate pollution in this country is going up, not down like it must if we are to continue enjoying life on our beautiful planet.
By weakening the BCA’s membership, we can neutralise their influence over climate policy in Australia – and get back on track in building a future that’s good for everyone and every living thing.
Sign the open letter now asking Coles and Woolworths to leave the climate-wrecking BCA:
As customers, shareholders and employees of Coles and Woolworths, we call on the supermarket giants to leave the Business Council of Australia (BCA) – it continues to undermine climate policy in Australia and advocate for the weakening of environmental laws.
We are concerned about the climate crisis and want action.

Do what is right – leave BCA
Listen to your customers – heed what they are saying. I am yet another voting with my feet – there are plenty of alternatives and they are increasing day by day.
Collecting soft plastics is a great start, leaving the BCA is another.
It is clear the BCA needs to understand the effect it is having on a critical area of policy.
My custom will depend on the response. We have simple choices
Shopping is necessary but I thank one good thing.. CHOICE! I choose where I will shop & right now.. Coles & Woolworths.. you’re not it! Do the right thing!! …simple!
Coles and Woolworths have got some great recycling initiatives and I support their attempts to reduce plastic in supply chains (although more radical action is needed). But meaningful environmental policies have for too long been stymied by lobbying by corporate interests in this country, and now we are seeing the results.
I avoid shopping at Coles and Woolies but would reconsider if they leave the BCA and take more meaningful action to reduce plastic use in their supply chains.
As with many others, I am starting to realise that voting with my dollar is one of the best ways to enact change in this current world. As such, I will be shopping elsewhere until Coles leaves the BCA and begins to lead by example on responding to the climate emergency, environment-damaging packaging and overproduction and overconsumption. This is your opportunity to lead and be remembered as a contributor to positive change.
You have an ethical responsibility to sustain us, not poison us.
Dear Supermarkets,
As a consumer I have a choice -will it be Coles, Woolies or Aldi ??? AND my choice will absolutely be the supermarket that is making the right choices re :the environment whether its plastic bags , plastic wrapping of fresh goods or being a member of the BCA ! Your choice BCA or your many customers – there are better business models and they’re out there – look at Denmark , Germany , Norway for inspiration and LEAVE THE BCA . STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT and not politically expedient . I do believe you can and will do this , sincerely your customers & probably many farmers and business owners concerned about the environment & remember they are ALL your customers every single day with a choice of where to buy their groceries !
