To all Australian banks,

As the funders for many of our biggest and boldest projects, you hold the unique power to direct huge money into solutions to the climate crisis — and away from making it worse. We urge you to invest in our future, not coal and gas. We call on you to:

  • Set a deadline — 2030 or earlier — to end all your investments in thermal coal
  • Rule out funding any new or expanded thermal coal, oil or gas projects
  • Ramp up funding for climate solutions like clean energy

By 2030 we must be carbon neutral to prevent thermal runaway to extinction of our and most other species. Civilisation, banking and money will be redundant pretty quickly, so stop all fossil lending cos it WILL kill your business model.

More and more people I know are choosing to invest their money (primarily banking and superannuation) in companies whose activities align with their values. Using your position to take a stand on something so important is a no-brainer.

Invest in renewables, not fossil fuels and play a productive part in improving the health of the planet and its inhabitants.

The Australian federal government and the state governments of Queensland and New South Wales are desperately trying to sell as much coal as they can before we become international pariahs for doing so. But we could choose instead to become an international renewable energy superpower. That sounds like a more sensible long term investment to me.
