To all Australian banks,

As the funders for many of our biggest and boldest projects, you hold the unique power to direct huge money into solutions to the climate crisis — and away from making it worse. We urge you to invest in our future, not coal and gas. We call on you to:

  • Set a deadline — 2030 or earlier — to end all your investments in thermal coal
  • Rule out funding any new or expanded thermal coal, oil or gas projects
  • Ramp up funding for climate solutions like clean energy

We have to start to try NOT to reach that 1.5 degree rise in global warming NOW – not in 15 years time!

Surely it is in your long term interest to stop funding dirty coal & be seen to do it – many are watching what you do!
T is easy for many of us to place our money elsewhere, possibly with better returns!

The current covid 19 crisis is a sample of the further and more intense devastation which awaits our planet if urgent action is not taken to reduce global warming as much as possible right now ! There will be no winners on a dead planet, we need funding bodies to do what our government will not. The time for corporate greed is over.

Banks and big business must show leadership because our government is failing us.

Our future needs a commitment to investment in Clean Energy from the banking industry. We need strong leaders to secure change for a positive outcome. I hope the banking industry will make the necessary change and invest in clean energy.

The Australian public witnessed how greedy and ruthless the Australian banking industry was during the Banking Royal Commission to make a quick buck out of their customers. Now it’s time to change your business
culture for the future well being of your customers by ending your investment in climate polluting fossil fuel energy sources. If you don’t, you are continuing your desvastating climate destroying, environmental destruction which is, and will continue, to adversely impact the health and well being of every living thing on this beautiful planet!
Fossil fuels are “old” destructive technology, just like commercial whaling is! Do the right thing by your customers and planet Earth and change your investments into clean energy now, be an industry leader, not a dumb selfish follower and show you care about people and future generations who could also be your customers while e er man can live on this planet. We have to do the right thing to maintain a healthy biologically diverse planet so it can survive, we your customers can survive, and your business survives.
So please change your investment into 100% clean energy NOW!!!!

I call on the banks to actively commit wholeheartedly to move money investments and business out of coal and gas and this includes future funding of any new or expanded thermal coal, oil or gas projects.

Additionally to set a deadline — 2030 or earlier — to end all investments in thermal coal and do it.

And finally invest in climate solutions like clean energy to save the future of our planet. This is absolutely essential.

If the Government won’t accept and act on the damage done by climate change, then holding the big organizations to account is the way forward.

I am joining the many others I am sure are sending this message to you.

The banking sector has a moral and corporate responsibility to act in the best interests of its “publics”, that is – all those who have an interest in or are affected by the actions of the company.

Most of your bank’s public are not shareholders, customers or employees. Your biggest public is the rest of the world who are affected by your investment decisions. There is no economic or environmental benefit to investing in coal and gas. On the contrary, there is clear evidence of the damage to both.

The CEO of Siemens has recognised the reputational and economic damage of their agreement to provide services to the Adani coal enterprise and now wishes he had listened to the millions pleading for them not to accept the business proposal to go ahead. The message is clear – it is not good business to put profit ahead of compassion for people and the environment. In fact there are good examples now of companies who have acted compassionately and made good profit.

The world of business is changing, and the public are calling out companies who make poor decisions that impact our very livelihoods. Your bank is now in our view.

I have thought for a long time that big investors will be the only way we will get on top of the dirty energy problem. it would be so good if Westpac could come on board.

If you consider that, if things go on without curtailing the use of coal, oil and gas to obtain energy, there is no hope for this planet to survive as a base for most life, then the profit margins seem so irrelevant. If you do not redirect funds towards sustainable energy production, then you are killing your grand children and their children! Please think about it.
