Lodge a missing creature alert with your Member of Parliament

Missing_Creature_Report__600px_web_SouthernCorroboreeFrog.jpg

Teeny tiny southern corroboree frogs live in a small mountainous patch of Kosciuszko National Park. They ooze poison from their striking skin and hibernate in logs, bark and leaf litter in winter.

But habitat destruction, climate damage, bushfires and a devastating frog fungus mean there are probably less than 100 left in the wild.

Will you lodge a missing creature alert with your local Member of Parliament? Tell them we need strong national environment laws to protect the places and wildlife we love – and ask them to raise this with their party leader.

Fill out the webform with your name and why you care. We'll print your name and message on a special missing creature alert and post it to your local MP. If you prefer, you can print and post it yourself.

I have known of this little frog since childhood and have been charmed and delighted that Australia is the only place on earth this little fellow with it’s unique appearance and habit lives. But now ONLY around 100 live in the wild. In your position as a member of Government you have power to do something to save this little fellow for your grandchildren and on into the future.
You have the chance and the responsibility to make a change. Sincerely Merryl Marsh

I have done a lot of research on these beautiful creatures during my time as a biology student at the University of Newcastle. They face a formidable challenge for survival against the deadly chytrid fungus which has decimated amphibian populations around the country since its introduction to Australia in the 1980s. On top of this, brumbys and wild pigs cause habitat loss for the southern coroboree frog in the snowy mountains. There needs to be more awareness of the challenges that this species faces so that more can be done to protect them.

The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated, said Mahatma Gandhi. Australia can gain greatness by treating its indigenous creatures with compassion instead of using profits to justify the means.

These creatures are so special and unique! We must enact laws to effectively protect our endangered creatures before it’s too late.

Please do not let my generation be the one who knew and did nothing about it. All wildlife have a role to play in the ecosystem. We have a duty of care to protect their environment and their existence.

We need alternative sustainable energy sources, not oil and gas. If you destroy our biodiversity and its habitat, you also destroy human habitat as all animals depend on these ecosystems.

Dear Member of Parliament,

Biodiversity is its biggest decline since the extinction of the dinosaurs, yet it is absolutely required for finding of new medicines, clean water supply, and resilient crop breeding. Sanctuaries and National Parks also benefit tourism and sustainable supply of wild species e.g. for fishery and forest revegetation.

Please support the important roles of sanctuaries and National Parks for conservation to ensure that we can ensure that future generations can enjoy these essential ecosystem services.

Best regards
Peter

Dear MP,

We need to look after our environment if we expect the environment to look after us. Stop extinction or we will not survive.

Gerald Durrell put it like this: “The world is as delicate and as complicated as a spider’s web. If you touch one thread you send shudders running through all the other threads. We’re not just touching a thread, we’re tearing great holes in it.” Every species has its place. We need strong national environment laws to protect places and wildlife and, ultimately, ourselves.

These precious unique fauna deserve our full protection and care. Australia critically requires a strong cohesive national conservation plan supported by well drafted environment legislation which is then properly monitored and enforced. I call on you as my local MP to urgently elevate this issue for urgent consideration and taking of real effective action by your party.
