Transport is Australia's second biggest source of climate pollution, and most of it’s coming from the exhausts of our cars, utes and trucks.
But we can put our vehicle emissions in reverse! Strong fuel efficiency standards now would make cleaner vehicles more available and affordable to more people in Australia and hit the accelerator on taking CO2 off our roads.
Right now the Australian government is asking us in the community for our input on these standards. It's critical that we lend our voices now to make the standards strong enough to clean up our dangerous vehicle pollution.

What to include in your comment
In your submission, you can mention that you want the standards to:

Take effect as soon as possible: Have the standards come into effect as soon as possible, which will be mid-2024, so that we reduce transport emissions from light vehicles now.

Be tough on pollution: Require all new cars sold in Australia to have zero emissions from 2035, which is in line with limiting global heating to a 1.5-degree rise.

Insure affordability: Ensure that by 2035 all new cars sold in Australia have zero emissions, creating a second-hand market for low-emissions vehicles sooner.

Be mandatory and rigorous: Legislate the standards, make them mandatory for all manufacturers, and don’t allow accounting tricks like super credits, offsets etc. that stop the genuine reduction of CO2 emissions.

It’s time to bring in stringent fuel standards to clean up the exhaust gas polluted air we are forced to breathe.
Australia is an embarrassment when it comes to environmental standards, we always seem to be dragging our heels. Australians want strong climate action and we deserve a government that wants that too. We’re calling for 100% zero-emission passenger cars to be sold from 2035 and demand the legislation comes into effect by mid-2024. Our family is one of the few households that has managed to buy an EV, replacing our diesel-powered car. It was by no means easy (either financially or logistically). We shouldn’t have to face so many barriers in order to do the right thing by the environment. Ensuring the fuel efficient standards come into effect by mid-2024 will be one less barrier Australians have to face in order to get closer to the environmental standards enjoyed by many other nations.
You are right. and the carbon monoxide is weakening every one’s immune system thus AIDS and Covid. Electric cars are the solution of course. David
Raise the bar for EV car options. Raise the bar for car emissions with high standards to reduce carbon emissions and associated health risks. Remember when Catalytic Converters were introduced with lead petrol and shifted car manufacturing and public acceptance. Let’s not make the next transition to carbon reduction a longer journey than necessary.
Let’s give Australian people choice to transition to EV vehicles to meets their work and family needs and to reduce air and noise pollution. Give people the motivation to save their environment by saving on energy and transportation by installing roof solar and options to store excess energy in their EV vehicle. Come on! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?LET’S GET TO IT.
I recommend introducing standards for fuel efficiency by mid 2024 so we in Australia have a better chance to reach climate goals by 2030. By mandating ALL NEW delivery vehicles and buses be EVs only, our chances to achieve are greatly increased.

I am appalled that Australia stands with Russia, as the only two nations in the developed world not to have fuel efficiency standards. Vehicle pollution has an enormous detrimental affect on the lives of Australians and significant deleterious impacts on the environment. Please legislate the standards, making them mandatory for all manufacturers, and insure that all new cars sold in Australia have zero emissions from 2035 in line with limiting global heating to 1.5° rise.
We need fuel efficiency standards urgently.
It is time to stop urban sprawl which destroys wildlife habitat – much of our wildlife in Australia is in an extinction crisis because of industrial, agricultural and housing sprawl. Next, we need to improve public transit; Next we need to get road trains and trucks off the roads with better train networks across the country and within cities. And of course get everyone using public transit – need to make it COVID safe… Huge job ahead with climate change increasing likelihood of more pandemics.

I ask that we have alternative sustainable options for fuel.
I, and many individuals are currently provided with 10% ethanol fuel or to purchase expensive electric vehicles, that are not feasible for many families in the current economic environment.
Could i please ask that this issue is looked into to provide Australia with a more prosperous future and encourage individuals to work together in improving our climatic conditions.

I strongly support the introduction of a fuel efficiency standard and aiming for zero emissions vehicles only to be sold in Australia by 2035.
Make this a legislated standard such that loopholes such as offsets can’t be used. This will greatly assist in our efforts to keep global warming to 1.5degrees.

We have the tecknowlogy to reduce vehicle polution, why do continue to make people sick and even die? Medical expences must be greater than the cost of cleaning up our transport. New standards regarding transport emissions should be at least as good as most other countries.
