Make a comment & help clean up Australia's vehicle pollution

Your comment will be included in an ACF community submission to the Australian goverment.

Transport is Australia's second biggest source of climate pollution, and most of it’s coming from the exhausts of our cars, utes and trucks.

But we can put our vehicle emissions in reverse! Strong fuel efficiency standards now would make cleaner vehicles more available and affordable to more people in Australia and hit the accelerator on taking CO2 off our roads.

Right now the Australian government is asking us in the community for our input on these standards. It's critical that we lend our voices now to make the standards strong enough to clean up our dangerous vehicle pollution.

Make a comment now for strong fuel efficiency standards to be included in an ACF community submission to the Australian government before the Friday 31 May deadline.

What to include in your comment

In your submission, you can mention that you want the standards to:

  1. Take effect as soon as possible: Have the standards come into effect as soon as possible, which will be mid-2024, so that we reduce transport emissions from light vehicles now.
  2. Be tough on pollution: Require all new cars sold in Australia to have zero emissions from 2035, which is in line with limiting global heating to a 1.5-degree rise.
  3. Insure affordability: Ensure that by 2035 all new cars sold in Australia have zero emissions, creating a second-hand market for low-emissions vehicles sooner.
  4. Be mandatory and rigorous: Legislate the standards, make them mandatory for all manufacturers, and don’t allow accounting tricks like super credits, offsets etc. that stop the genuine reduction of CO2 emissions.

Elon Musk is developing the world’s big electric cars industry while Toyota is developing the world’s big hydrogen cars industry. This means all 3 trillion cars in existence will have to find a graveyard, while two companies continue the pollution in their car parts manufacturing processes, all in a world where the Pfizers, Gates, Schwabs, Kochs, the War Mongers Industries, etc etc are busy reducing the world population and turning the rest of us into mindless robots. Give this world a break, people are tired of living by ongoing lies and fear distribution.

Without fuel efficiency standards, Australia is in danger of being a dumping ground for petrol cars unable to be sold elsewhere. Given that our cars are responsible for a huge percentage of our emissions, these standards are a basic requirement of our meeting 2030 targets and beyond.

The basic reason for the pollution is the amount of the amount of travel required for people to go to a place of employment from their place of residence. The Radburn system which separated work from living is no longer viable. we must plan our living communities around our work place so that the amount of travel by automobiles is greatly reduced. This with increased fuel efficiency and alternative methods of travel could redice transportation pollution significantly.

All used vehicles should pass an emissions efficiency test before being sold.
All new vehicles should comply with EU standards from 2024.

when is the Aus govt going to seriously address this issue. We want strong Action Now. We drive some of the filthiest vehicles in the World, we are becoming a dumping ground for the most polluting inefficient vehicles. Without stringent fuel standards there is no incentive for manufacturers to have to introduce EVs as they don’t need to meet high level Pollution control standards. Air Pollution is the No1 World killer. It is greater than the combined totals of all those killed in Wars, Vehicle accidents and murders annually. Australia and Russia are the only developed countries with no fuel standards which is an embarrassment and something Australia and all Politicians should be ashamed about. Vehicle Pollution is having a massive negative and dangerous affect on the Australian population it is particularly hazardous to children. Just because much of the really dangerous vehicle pollution cm2.5 can’t be seen doesn’t mean it’s not there. It is a scandal that Australia is building road infrastructure and tunnels with no World Class filtration as is happening in Sydney with the NorthCONnex and WestCONnex tunnel systems. As Govt refuses to address air pollution in these road systems then vehicles that pollute should be banned from using these road and tunnel systems and they should be for the exclusive use of EVs.

Australia has fallen well behind most European and Asian countries when it comes to fuel efficiency standards. We are already seeing it in the limited range of electric vehicles available for us to purchase. Pollution from ICE vehicles has been documented as causing serious health effects in both adults and, particularly, children.
It is time to put a stop to these problems.
Australia MUST legislate to ensure all new cars sold here are zero-emission vehicles – and the sooner this happens the better.
We must also have more affordably-priced EVs available in sufficient quantities and vehicle sizes for those of us who want them to buy. That includes small City cars, which should be prioritised over SUVs because they are less polluting and safer for the population as a whole.
The new standards MUST be made mandatory for all importers. No exceptions and not flexibility for accountign tricks to reduce their requirements.
There must also be government encouragement for local vehicle manufacturers to produce Australian designed and manufactured vehicles for Australian conditions. We used to have a car industry – and we need one again.
The time to act is NOW.
Please don’t let the Australian people down.

Australia is trailing the world in the uptake of electric cars- which means more emissions and more pollution. Please insist on strong fuel efficiency and emissions standards that legislate regular emissions checks on older vehicles and mandate that by 2030 all new cars sold in Australia have zero-emissions.

I’m embarrassed to be Australian with our naive, laggard approach to technological change. The rest of the world is leaving us behind. I’m currently travelling in rural Turkey where this is so evident. I despair at our Australian complacency, laziness and absence of vision.

With transport being the second highest polluter in Australia, I’d love to see our country come into line with other developed countries and introduce fuel efficiency standards. We need to see a change asap if we want to have any hope in coming into line and limiting global heating.

How on earth did we find ourselves aligned with Russia as the only nations still importing these vehicles. We MUST do better PLEASE

It is imperative that the Albanese Government delivers strong fuel efficiency standards for Australia with the least possible delay. It is unconscionable that these were not introduced years ago by previous conservative governments. Please do not delay their introduction by one more day than is absolutely necessary.

I believe it’s a scandal beyond words that we, in Australia, are still having to agitate for efficient transport vehicle pollution controls. In Northern Europe laws were tightened back in the 1970-80s. 50 YEARS later and 10s of thousands of deaths later, we here in Aus are still resisting this life-changing change. SHAME!

Dear Mr Prime Minister, Please improve our fuel efficiency standards urgently – each day counts with adding to the pollution.
Please require all new cars sold in Australia to have zero emissions from 2035 or sooner if possible.
Insure affordability: Ensure that by 2035 all new cars sold in Australia have zero emissions, creating a second-hand market for low-emissions vehicles sooner.
Be mandatory and rigorous: Legislate the standards, make them mandatory for all manufacturers, and don’t allow accounting tricks like super credits, offsets etc. that stop the genuine reduction of CO2 emissions.

Consultations on fuel efficiency standards need not involve Toyota. The company has made its own decisions on its place in the changing auto market and will be obliged to live with those decisions; what Toyota has chosen to do (or not do) should not be permitted by the Australian Government to impinge upon the rest of us.

Please upgrade the fuel efficient standards and make all cars have tests to see they come within the standards and all new cares met them. In NZ we had warrant of fitness tests yearly and in US yearly emission tests we should have them here too

It’s very important to finally take the move the LNP neglected for so long to impose restrictions on motor vehicles emissions. We are way behind so many countries it’s shameful. We also need an end of life vehicle recycling system!
