ANZ is a major sponsor of the Australian Open: a cultural highlight that promotes fitness, community, and the importance of getting outside. ANZ is also a funding new and expansionary coal, oil or gas projects, which are turbocharging the climate crisis and putting our sports at risk.

This is not a game. ANZ has a climate problem.

Due to increasing heatwaves, the Open and other matches are at risk of cancellation, our champions and fans at risk of heatstroke.

They need to hear from you that you want to see ANZ shift the billions of dollars they are responsible for out of burning and digging fossil fuels and into solutions that will protect us from droughts, floods and heatwaves.

To ANZ:

"As concerned citizens, customers, shareholders, and employees, we call on ANZ to stop financing the digging and burning of fossil fuels. The first steps are:

  1. divesting from thermal coal by 2030 or earlier;
  2. divesting from oil & gas in line with the Paris climate agreement;
  3. not investing in new or expansion coal, gas & oil projects.

Burning fossil fuels is the biggest driver of climate damage. We are concerned about the climate crisis and want action."

You should be ashamed of yourselves, still backing fossil fuel companies when the whole world knows that these exacerbate climate change and that there is just as much money to be made from investing in renewable energy which is environmentally friendly

I am deeply disappointed in ANZ’s disingenuous proclamation that it will no longer fund new coal mines only when Australia’s coal export markets have achieved net-zero emissions.

Science tells us (Hansen et al (2008) “Target Atmospheric CO2: Where Should Humanity Aim?”, https://benthamopen.com/contents/pdf/TOASCJ/TOASCJ-2-217.pdf) that the world should stop all burning of fossil fuels before the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rises to 350 parts per million.

Trouble is, this safe operating limit was breached in 1989 – decades before low-cost renewable technologies that could replace all coal and gas for power generation were developed – and the situation is only getting worse. This means the world, including Australia and all the nations that buy coal and LNG from Australia, need to totally cease using coal and LNG as rapidly as possible.

The Good News is, renewables are now lower cost than new coal (let alone gas), even when you include the cost of the batteries that renewable intermittency requires (ref https://theconversation.com/pumped-hydro-isnt-our-energy-future-its-our-past-146989)

Opposition to this dire necessity is certainly not in the best interests of ANZ shareholders, customers and board members, and especially of the children of these shareholders, customers and board members.

Instead, what ANZ should be doing is financing just transitions – in particular, installation of renewable power-generating equipment – wind turbines, and solar farms.

For the sake of your own children, who will have to care for you when you are old and helpless and endure whatever climate and environment you bequeath them, please bring forward this change of direction.

Yours faithfully,
David Arthur
