Make a comment & help clean up Australia's vehicle pollution

Your comment will be included in an ACF community submission to the Australian goverment.

Transport is Australia's second biggest source of climate pollution, and most of it’s coming from the exhausts of our cars, utes and trucks.

But we can put our vehicle emissions in reverse! Strong fuel efficiency standards now would make cleaner vehicles more available and affordable to more people in Australia and hit the accelerator on taking CO2 off our roads.

Right now the Australian government is asking us in the community for our input on these standards. It's critical that we lend our voices now to make the standards strong enough to clean up our dangerous vehicle pollution.

Make a comment now for strong fuel efficiency standards to be included in an ACF community submission to the Australian government before the Friday 31 May deadline.

What to include in your comment

In your submission, you can mention that you want the standards to:

  1. Take effect as soon as possible: Have the standards come into effect as soon as possible, which will be mid-2024, so that we reduce transport emissions from light vehicles now.
  2. Be tough on pollution: Require all new cars sold in Australia to have zero emissions from 2035, which is in line with limiting global heating to a 1.5-degree rise.
  3. Insure affordability: Ensure that by 2035 all new cars sold in Australia have zero emissions, creating a second-hand market for low-emissions vehicles sooner.
  4. Be mandatory and rigorous: Legislate the standards, make them mandatory for all manufacturers, and don’t allow accounting tricks like super credits, offsets etc. that stop the genuine reduction of CO2 emissions.

Car pollution is an extremely dangerous poison for our health.
It has been found that it increases Dimentia, lung cancer and ADHD in children. It is very much time that regulation be introduced regarding petrol diesel and the size of those huge polluting trucks that some men are so fond of driving everyday. Yes great vehicles for off road but the amount of petrol, and other resources to run these monstrosities is offensive.
ADHD is especially dangerous for most children and if has been medically established that it is pollution related. That alone should be enough to limit the amount of petrol, diesel and other pollutants.
We are causing soo many problems for OUR children. Are we soo foolish we don’t understand??

Strong fuel efficiency standards are well overdue in this country.

The standards should:

1) Take effect as soon as possible: Have the standards come into effect as soon as possible, which will be mid-2024, so that we reduce transport emissions from light vehicles now.

2) Be tough on pollution: Require all new cars sold in Australia to have zero emissions from 2035, which is in line with limiting global heating to a 1.5-degree rise.

3) Insure affordability: Ensure that by 2035 all new cars sold in Australia have zero emissions, creating a second-hand market for low-emissions vehicles sooner.

4) Be mandatory and rigorous: Legislate the standards, make them mandatory for all manufacturers, and don’t allow accounting tricks like super credits, offsets etc. that stop the genuine reduction of CO2 emissions.

With time running out, there is so much that needs to be done to ensure that we can meet emissions targets.
We must make fuel efficiency standards a priority and get those changes through as quickly as possible.
The sooner we can get these standards in place the sooner there will be a viable and affordable second hand car market for low emissions vehicles.
Legislate the standards, make them mandatory for all manufacturers, and don’t allow accounting tricks like super credits, offsets etc. that stop the genuine reduction of CO2 emissions.
I genuinely wish to be a part of this movement but need to government to enforce these standards so that EV vehicles become more affordable for everyone.

I went to a well attended public meeting
of ‘Farmers for Ev’s’ this week.
People in the country have hardly any public transport and want fossil free cars now. Australia has become a dumping ground for inefficient polluting cars.
We cannot afford the EVs that are so much cheaper in Europe and America.
We need strong government regulation to make a fast change over to electric cars and reduce our co2 emissions drastically.
Annika 2023-05-26 07:06:39 +1000
Please organize the transport system in a way that will reduce the number of vehicle movements before I get run over and choked to death.
Paul 2023-05-26 06:45:29 +1000
Please don’t let Australia be a dumping ground for high emission vehicles. It is just so important that we take steps to reduce vehicular pollution as much as possible, for climate change and for human health. Please do the right thing. It’s a no brainer!

Please put strict emission standards in place to protect our air quality and reduce greenhouse gases. This legislation is overdue and cannot wait.
Yael 2023-05-26 00:25:13 +1000
Australia needs to have more stringent fuel emission standards as soon as possible (mid 2024). Our current standards are appalling in relation to those of many other countries. For the sake of our health the air quality must be improved. For the purpose of urgently slowing the heating of the planet we need to act now.
Lynn 2023-05-25 23:35:48 +1000
We need to take urgent action to address climate change.
Given transport is a significant source of climate pollution, it is important that we have policies in place to rapidly reduce emissions from transport in Australia.
As such, please support stronger fuel efficiency standards for vehicles, and implement these standards as soon as possible, to minimise the adverse impacts of vehicle emissions.

It is so necessary, do it.

To the Australian Government,

Please develop strong fuel efficiency standards for light and heavy vehicles to take effect as soon as possible (mid-2024 at the latest).

Pollution from fuel exhaust compromises people’s health and is a major contributor to climate change (and the ensuing bushfires, floods, etc.).

To help people make the transition, please set a zero-emission limit by 2035 (or earlier), build a comprehensive network of off-road paths around the country to encourage pedal transport, horse riding, and walking, and make electric vehicles more affordable.

For electric vehicles to be “green”, the source of electricity for charging them also needs to be zero-emission. Local and small-scale hydro, wave-based, and recycled/recyclable solar are some great options. Vehicles also should not be allowed to emit radiation from wireless connectivity, as the continued increase of wireless radiation from devices, towers, and satellites is putting the lives of insects, animals, plants, and people at risk even faster than climate change.

As emission-lowering legislation is developed, please make sure that it’s clearly laid out in law, enforced for all manufacturers with no exceptions, and that companies not be allowed to buy offsets for their emissions in place of actually eliminating those emissions.

Thank you for all you do.

We must have comparable fuel efficiency standards to those in Europe to expedite the use of EV
vehicles here and so that we’re not a dumping ground for dirty ‘ ‘gas guzzlers’

Urgency is essential.
You are in a position to create, time and support the transition to a zero emission transport industry.

I urge action now to end the enormous aggregate of pollution that could easily jeapodise plans for limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees and sea level rise across the globe causing millions to move.
Sybil 2023-05-25 21:16:47 +1000
Australia needs strong fuel efficiency standards for new cars, as soon as possible. This will help our health, reduce carbon emissions, and help Australians spend less money on fuel.

This should be in line with our commitments on climate change and scientific requirements to avoid increasing global temperatures above 1.5C. This means increasing stringency up to 0 emissions by 2035.

It is vital that this is legislated, required for all manufacturers, and is not allowed to be bypassed by offset credits, or other loopholes to avoid real change.

Let’s take action to drastically reduce the amount of fuel based pollution our vehicles are creating – leadership is needed

To Whom It May Concern.

I am a concerned citizen wanting to do my part to limit pollution. I am frustrated and and feel locked into fossil fuel vehicles without access to cheaper EVs to make the switch financially viable.
We need to make strong fuel efficiency standards that help drive change in the industry.
New standards need to come into effect as soon as possible. All new cars sold in Australia must be zero emissions by 2035 and must be affordable.

We need to act as soon as possible to limit a global temperature rise of no more than 1.5 degrees.

Kind regards
