Make a comment & help clean up Australia's vehicle pollution

Your comment will be included in an ACF community submission to the Australian goverment.

Transport is Australia's second biggest source of climate pollution, and most of it’s coming from the exhausts of our cars, utes and trucks.

But we can put our vehicle emissions in reverse! Strong fuel efficiency standards now would make cleaner vehicles more available and affordable to more people in Australia and hit the accelerator on taking CO2 off our roads.

Right now the Australian government is asking us in the community for our input on these standards. It's critical that we lend our voices now to make the standards strong enough to clean up our dangerous vehicle pollution.

Make a comment now for strong fuel efficiency standards to be included in an ACF community submission to the Australian government before the Friday 31 May deadline.

What to include in your comment

In your submission, you can mention that you want the standards to:

  1. Take effect as soon as possible: Have the standards come into effect as soon as possible, which will be mid-2024, so that we reduce transport emissions from light vehicles now.
  2. Be tough on pollution: Require all new cars sold in Australia to have zero emissions from 2035, which is in line with limiting global heating to a 1.5-degree rise.
  3. Insure affordability: Ensure that by 2035 all new cars sold in Australia have zero emissions, creating a second-hand market for low-emissions vehicles sooner.
  4. Be mandatory and rigorous: Legislate the standards, make them mandatory for all manufacturers, and don’t allow accounting tricks like super credits, offsets etc. that stop the genuine reduction of CO2 emissions.

Australia should be proud and leading the race on solar power with all the free sunshine we have in our beautiful country. Instead the leaders of Australia choose to make us live in dinosaur age behind the rest of the planet. We must move forward quickly and stop ✋ selling any cars/ trucks that are not solar powered or electric powered because we don’t need fumes heating up our planet. We must protect the future of our planet and ALL COUNTRIES MUST PARTICIPATE IN STOPPING GLOBAL WARMING!!! Zero emissions for the future must start now.

Please take steps to have emission controls on all all road vehicles, especially new vehicles.

Current Australian fuel standards are a disgrace. We should be leading not trailing the world in the uptake of electron powered transport. The liberal government will go down in history as regressive in its thinking. The Labor government should NOT follow their path. What on earth are you waiting for, get on with it. Richard Pagliaro

Chris Bowen promised action on this shortly after the Albanese government was elected. We can’t afford to take our time. We’re way behind the rest of the world and the car industry is laughing at us. Let’s get on with it!

Fuel efficiency standards are vital. With more and more in fill in our cities air pollution is inevitably going to get worse with more vehicles on our roads. Surely this is seriously being taken in to consideration as this pollution has detrimental health outcomes for people. Time to move forward Australia and push for far cleaner vehicles.

Clean air is fundamental to our ongoing health and the health of the all other creatures and plant life. We all need to protect our fundamental life supports – clean air – clean water – healthy soils -shelter.

Australia urgently and immediately needs a fee on carbon. It also needs subsidies to buy e-bikes, and e-vehicles to make them far more attractive than petrol cars. We need much lower speed limits, bike lanes, and e-vehicle infrastructure. We need to immediately start to phase out all non-zero emission vehicles.

Would love to see fuel efficiency standards be introduced in Australia and do all we can for a healthier climate and greener future.

Not only should we be reducing the terrible pollutants from cars, utes and trucks but we should also be focusing on certain aircraft. Tourist Helicopters only carry about 3 people at a time dumping 250 ton of CO2 including carcinogenic polycarbons for every hour of flight. Aviation standards have not changed in decades, so please include certain aircraft who contribute massive pollutants to our air as well as the psychological harm from the noise to our wildlife. Please have a more holistic approach.

Good evening.

I respectfully urge you as a matter of urgency to drastically reduce carbon monoxides, particulate matter, and other pollutants from vehicles as soon as possible – by 2024. Have the standards come into effect as soon as possible, which will be mid-2024,

All new cars sold in Australia need to have zero emissions from 2030, which is in line with limiting global pollution and subsequent heating to a 1.5-degree rise.

By 2030, all new cars sold in Australia must have zero emissions and we need to create a second-hand market for low-emissions vehicles sooner rather than later.

These standards must be legislated, mandatory and binding on all countries globally.

They should be mandatory for all manufacturers, and don’t allow accounting tricks like super credits, offsets etc that stop genuine reductions in pollution.

I believe everything highlighted above is of utmost national and global significance. This must be fasttracked and implemented as soon as humanly and technologically possible.

Thank you for your consideration and action.

Sincerely
Jon

Australia must adopt fuel efficiency standards as soon as possible to reduce transport emissions when time is not on our side. We have seen many countries around the world adopt better standards and incentives for low and zero emission cars and we must stop dragging our feet. By doing this we will reduce transport costs by using less fuel per kilometer and force dealerships to import lighter, more efficient, vehicles.

We must stop subsidising higher polluting vehicles and fossil fuels to encourage uptake and expansion of the renewable energy network.

In addition to the need for infrastructure for ev cars, there should be a working party to focus on ev trucks – small to very large. In Europe these are making inroads, less pollution, less noise, less maintenance. Volvo showed one at a recent exhibition in Brisbane – https://www.brisbanetruckshow.com.au/news/volvo-charging-ahead-in-transition-to-electric-trucks/

We have been in the thrall of international big business for so long that it is hard for us in Australia to break loose but break loose we must if we are to have a future. Enough of big brother business manipulation of our political and private lives.

There are so many ways that we are damaging this planet, many solutions seem out of our control at this moment- yet vehicle pollution is one thing that our government can take action on straight away. Other countries have led the way!

Why is it that Australia always seems to be in CATCH UP MODE- it is not that the govt is ill informed unless they as a whole do not read the news and follow the fact that THE WORLD is on the verge of critical pollution levels
WE NEED TO SET EMISSION STANDARDS ON ALL FORMS OF DIRTY FUEL BURNING VEHICLES BY SETTING EMISSIONS STANDARDS LIKE THE REST OF FIRST WORLD COUNTRIES
AS SOON AS THE GOVT DOES SOMETHING ABOUT OUR POLLUTING VEHICLES IWILL AS WELL INVEST IN A CAR WITH CLEAN CREDENTIALS

Firstly, we should Rd-open all our intrastate rail lines and encourage rail freight interstate. A train can transport goods at only a fraction of the fuel expenditure of B-doubles!

This simple truth is both major political parties in Australia use the fact that – unlike airlines and shipping companies buying in bulk – you cannot go past the fuel station to get your fuel. Holding that situation is dictated by the oil industry donating to the political parties. We should have been transitioning to bio and sustainable fuels two decades ago. ‘Up to’ 10% ethanol is a joke. The consequences are for their children to face in the next two. Good luck with that!
