"To the Prime Minister, Energy Minister, Environment Minister and Treasurer:
End coal and gas in Australia to ramp up climate action. That means:
- This decade, replacing existing coal, gas and uranium exports with a renewable-powered exports industry and climate-positive careers for communities
- No new coal and gas projects or infrastructure
- Stop spending public money on the fossil fuel industry – fund climate solutions instead."
A responsible government would use our public money to make our communities and wildlife thrive, not fund the industries damaging our climate. The Albanese Government has already taken some steps to advance climate ambition in Australia, but to truly slash climate pollution it must immediately end public funding for fossil fuels.
In the 2022-23 financial year, government subsidies for fossil fuels cost Australians $11.1 billion.
If we stop spending public money on fossil fuels now, we can help prevent even more damaging projects in the future. Currently, Australia has 114 new coal and gas projects, like Woodside's Scarborough project, in the pipeline and if the projects were to go ahead they would almost double our current domestic emissions. And that’s not including any emissions from exporting the coal and gas overseas!
For a safe climate future, let’s instead invest our public money into renewable exports that can replace coal and gas, slash pollution and create climate-positive jobs that future-proof our economy.

The IPCC Report stated clearly that if we want a livable planet, there must be no new fossil fuel developments. There must be no expansion of existing projects.
I want Australia to end coal and gas because I’m scared for the future. I’m scared for animals and forests and nature. It feels like every year it gets hotter and there are more natural disasters and unpredictable weather. I dread bushfires and that they will cause beautiful animals like koalas to go extinct.
I want to end coal and gas in Australia because we have been exploiting our beautiful country for way to long. We are destroying country and habitat in the creation of these mines and this one time use product is causing mass destruction to our environment, our health and puts the human race at risk of extinction. We know the temperatures are rising, the ice is melting the sea levels are rising and we just keep carrying on. I learned about the harmful effects of greenhouse gases in rim art school some 30 years ago. Reports were made in NZ as early as 1911 that coal burning caused this damage and no one will stop it. Do something!
The world is dying and I’m sick of corporate giants cashing in on it. Protect our futures. It’s the call we’ve been making from the start. We’re running out of time.
We need to STOP digging coal & gas out of the ground NOW.
The negative effects of mining, selling, exporting, and burning fossil fuels is killing the environment that we need to live in.
We need to get serious about the destruction it is causing and start making changes for a cleaner & greener future before it is too late

It’s a deadly addiction that they are pushing onto us. The fossil fuel industry needs to stop fuelling irreversible climate destruction that is presently demolishing the human rights of all citizens, especially young people and Indigenous peoples. Woodside needs to know that it must change its deadly business model, or get out of the energy business.
We need climate action not procrastination by fossil fuel giants.
