"To the Prime Minister, Energy Minister, Environment Minister and Treasurer:
End coal and gas in Australia to ramp up climate action. That means:
- This decade, replacing existing coal, gas and uranium exports with a renewable-powered exports industry and climate-positive careers for communities
- No new coal and gas projects or infrastructure
- Stop spending public money on the fossil fuel industry – fund climate solutions instead."
A responsible government would use our public money to make our communities and wildlife thrive, not fund the industries damaging our climate. The Albanese Government has already taken some steps to advance climate ambition in Australia, but to truly slash climate pollution it must immediately end public funding for fossil fuels.
In the 2022-23 financial year, government subsidies for fossil fuels cost Australians $11.1 billion.
If we stop spending public money on fossil fuels now, we can help prevent even more damaging projects in the future. Currently, Australia has 114 new coal and gas projects, like Woodside's Scarborough project, in the pipeline and if the projects were to go ahead they would almost double our current domestic emissions. And that’s not including any emissions from exporting the coal and gas overseas!
For a safe climate future, let’s instead invest our public money into renewable exports that can replace coal and gas, slash pollution and create climate-positive jobs that future-proof our economy.

Please cut monies given to fossil fuel companies as Australia and the rest of world are suffering from extreme weather as a direct result of using fossil fuels. I would like my grandchildren to have a decent future which they may not have if we keep financially supporting fossil fuel companies. They need to be made to reduce their emissions and the population needs to move towards renewable options.
Each year I see the beach erode a little further, the high tide get a little higher and now the East Coast Lows a little bigger and stronger. Government should stop subsidising coal, oil and gas because soon I will loose the value of my house as it becomes uninsurable. When that happens, I will find a good lawyer to sue government for my loss. If they can fund fossil fuel companies to make a profit, then they should be able to recompence me for the damage they cause.
it is well past time for reaching our climate change targets and even those are not strict enough.
Far from propping fossil fuel as an interim stopgap, as the previous government did to appease its financial backers, Australia should be accelerating towards a fossil fuel free future – in which it can be a world leader.
Urgent action is required. We have waited too long; please get on with it.
Our country, though reputed to be rugged, is in fact fragile, more so now than ever. Like our planet, it cannot withstand the harm done to the environment and the climate by coal and gas mining and usage.
I want Australia to end coal and gas mining, fracking and consumption because I have two young children. I want them to have a fighting chance of a future and to live in a world where biodiversity is abundant and the natural environment is valued. Ending coal and gas is imperative for all our survival.
