Since the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires, our governments have spent over $40 billion in public money supporting the continued expansion of the fossil fuel industry through subsidies and tax breaks.

Every minute, over governments hand over $21,143 to the fossil fuel industry.

It's time our governments stopped handing our public money to the industries most responsible for climate change and stopped approving new coal and gas projects. It's time to invest in a safe climate.

Sign the petition urging the Australian government to stop all subsidies and tax breaks for fossil fuels and end new climate-heating coal and gas projects and infrastructure in Australia.

Petition demands

"To the Prime Minister, Energy Minister, Environment Minister and Treasurer:

End coal and gas in Australia to ramp up climate action. That means:

  • This decade, replacing existing coal, gas and uranium exports with a renewable-powered exports industry and climate-positive careers for communities
  • No new coal and gas projects or infrastructure
  • Stop spending public money on the fossil fuel industry – fund climate solutions instead."

A responsible government would use our public money to make our communities and wildlife thrive, not fund the industries damaging our climate. The Albanese Government has already taken some steps to advance climate ambition in Australia, but to truly slash climate pollution it must immediately end public funding for fossil fuels.

In the 2022-23 financial year, government subsidies for fossil fuels cost Australians $11.1 billion.

If we stop spending public money on fossil fuels now, we can help prevent even more damaging projects in the future. Currently, Australia has 114 new coal and gas projects, like Woodside's Scarborough project, in the pipeline and if the projects were to go ahead they would almost double our current domestic emissions. And that’s not including any emissions from exporting the coal and gas overseas!

For a safe climate future, let’s instead invest our public money into renewable exports that can replace coal and gas, slash pollution and create climate-positive jobs that future-proof our economy.

Sign the petition and call on our government to step up for climate action.

Time is running out for our world. We need to transition quickly out of coal and gas and move to renewables. I am particularly upset to note foreign companies wanting to proceed with seismic gas exploration in the some of our most important marine areas. Hands off the Otway Basin.

I have nine grandchildren and realise that if coal and gas continue to be mined they face a very bleak future. The coal and gas mining industries need to abandon their operations asap.

I want Australia to end Government funding of coal, oil and gas because the health of our planet and our children and grandchildren depend on it.

I want Australia to end coal and gas exploration and development. Any further delays in scaling down the fossil fuel industry to ZERO will spell a bleaker future for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren .

Please stop all fossil fuel exploration, mining, exporting and government funding immediately. Please commit to doing everything possible to speed up the transition of renewables. I would love to see the government back green hydrogen, solar panel, HFCEV and BEV manufacturing here in Australia.

The science on climate change is settled regardless of what the Coalition, Murdoch press and their fossil fuel mates say. Please differentiate yourselves from those toothless fools and end all funding to fossil fuel projects instead using those funds to subsidise renewal energy projects. Thank you.

We want clever future-focused government policy for the betterment of our community. Corporate welfare provision to dying oil and gas industries is wasted investment of limited public funds, and should be ceased immediately in order to transfer that investment into growth industries that provide for future public infrastructure, future generations and the future of our planet.

How stupid are Australians…. I mean really…
Our power and gas costs are going through the roof with fossil fuel company’s wanting our Govt to back them, with tax payers money, in opening more areas to explore, so they can get more $ exporting it overseas. As for the return to the taxpayers, who,s Govt generously hand over OUR $ hoping to have supply guarantees to safegaurd our domestic supply… are left being told to “they can eat cake”. The Coalition was screaming every 12 moths or so “we need to find more fossil fuels…. so the Co’s can increase their exports…. I’m hoping Labor can turn this BS around…

Longtermism is a a word I’ve recently read and suggests that we have to think long way into the future. How will what we are doing today take away from future peoples’ way of living? Possibly a great deal…

Fossil fuel use is the primary source of CO2. Co2 can also be emitted from direct human-induced impacts on forestry and other land abuse such as deforestation, land clearing for agriculture and degradation of soils. Likewise, land can also remove CO2 from the atmosphere through reforestation, improvement of soils and farming as the land stands now, BUT NOT COAL MINING.

Given the wealth of the fossil fuel companies, particularly at this time, there is no need for continuing subsidies. The money could be better directed to renewable energy work.
