We love big old trees. You can see the passing of time in their gnarled trunks, the community of critters burrowing into their bark and the wildlife taking refuge in nests and leaf-lined hollows.

Yet big old trees and the animals which depend on them to survive are disappearing – fast.

Over decades, armies of bulldozers have charged through our forests, knocking down their homes. Loggers have ripped out trees and left mountain tops bare and bald.

We have laws to protect our forests and wildlife. But dodgy logging loopholes and weak accountability mechanisms have let companies destroy native forests and ignore the rules in federal environmental laws.

It’s unbelievable. In those twenty years, we’ve seen thousands of hectares of habitat for endangered wildlife clear-felled, logged and bulldozed.  A third of the Greater Glider population has disappeared, alongside some many other forest-dwelling animals. Our iconic koalas are losing their homes and their population has reduced by a quarter in three years in New South Wales.

We need to a new national framework of environment laws which will protect our big ancient trees, our air, our water, our wildlife and our future.

Sign the petition calling on Prime Minister Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to:

Create a new generation of national laws to protect our wildlife and big old trees.

This new framework of laws must:

  • Make the federal government responsible for protecting the air we breathe, our wildlife, our climate and the places we love
  • Establish an independent commission to set environmental standards
  • Create an independent national Environmental Protection Authority to make sure governments and businesses do the right thing by nature
  • Guarantee communities the right to have a say in environmental decisions

As part of a huge collaboration of groups – the Places You Love Alliance – we've convened an independent panel of legal experts to map out a blueprint for a new generation of national environmental laws. We have the solutions – all we need now is the political will.

By signing the petition, you're joining a growing community of people standing up for our living world.
