Canberra Friends of Grasslands (FoG) is a community group dedicated to conservation of natural temperate grassy ecosystems. FoG members help to conserve grasslands through hands-on projects and working parties. ACF Community Canberra is supporting the work of FOG in 2023 by participating in and promoting the monthly work parties at Gurubang Dhaura (Stirling Park). Activities include weeding and planting and they are a fantastic opportunity to learn about our local habitat from experts.

Gurubung Dhaura (also known as Stirling Park) on the Burley Griffin lake front, is a significant site for Ngunnawal people. Gurubung Dhaura is home to many significant local native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, grasses and wildlife. The area is ecologically important to the ACT, with large areas of critically endangered natural temperate grasslands and box gum woodlands and threatened flora and fauna species. The area is home to the spotted pardalote, the yam daisy and button wrinklewort.

Participants need to register for these events at least two days before the event, to confirm details of the starting locations or any last-minute changes. Note: work includes weeding, planting and rubbish removal. Herbicides are often used so these events are not suitable for young children. Tools are provided. You need to wear gardening clothes (including hat) and solid footwear appropriate for the work and the weather, and bring your own drinking water. Events will be cancelled if the weather is unsuitable: a) the forecast is 35 deg C+, b) it is a total fire ban day, c) there is lightning, d) air quality is hazardous, or e) heavy rain.

Come along and give our natural environs a helping hand.
