Our national environment laws are supposed to protect the places and wildlife we love.
But the once-in-a-decade review of those laws has found that nature in Australia is in big trouble. Australia has one of the worst extinction records on Earth, and even our most iconic wildlife like the koala and platypus are at risk in some states.
The independent reviewer, Professor Graeme Samuel, recommends a complete overhaul of our national environment laws to protect our country’s unique places, plants, animals and ecosystems for future generations.
Australia has one of the worst extinction records on Earth. It's time for laws that actually protect nature, and an independent regulator to enforce them.

As our population continues to grow, so does our demand for resources, putting pressure on our wildlife. It’s crucial we protect pockets of land forever
Development practices seem not to have changed from the “level everything” approach of the 80s and the state-based exemptions to laws protecting koala habitat are too wide. They seemed tipped in favour of clearing for spurious reasons rather than protecting habitat. National parks and green belts also too often have houses built too closely.
Stop calling nature areas ‘reserves’ when all you’re reserving them for is to be demolished for another housing estate and a fuel station
