ACF is hiring its next CEO
For nearly 60 years, the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) has been a bold, independent voice for nature. From winning World Heritage protection for the Great Barrier Reef to securing billions in clean energy investment, ACF has always stood up for the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the places we love.
Now, we’re looking for our next Chief Executive Officer — a visionary leader ready to guide Australia’s national environment organisation into its next chapter.
This is no ordinary leadership role. The climate and nature crises are intensifying, and our systems aren’t protecting people or our planet. We need a leader who can rise to this moment — someone who can unite people across sectors and communities, challenge the status quo, and drive bold, transformative change.
Our next CEO will lead a passionate team of 95 staff, a network of 40 community groups, and a movement of over 500,000 supporters. They’ll manage a high-performing Executive and work with an engaged Board and Council to shape ACF’s 2026–2030 strategy and deliver real-world wins for nature and people.
The ACF Board is looking for a CEO who brings three key areas of expertise: visionary leadership, passion for nature and organisational management. Of these, visionary leadership is the most important – someone who can inspire people, shape bold strategies and lead transformative action. We understand that no one person will be equally strong in all three areas. The Board is committed to shaping support around the new CEO’s strengths and areas of growth to ensure they are set up to succeed from day one. Non-negotiable in the role is a powerful culture builder – someone who brings joy to the work, leads with a collaborative spirit and listens deeply.
This moment also marks a transition from the extraordinary leadership of Kelly O’Shanassy, who has served as ACF’s CEO for over a decade. Kelly’s tenure has been defined by courage, integrity, and impact — from stopping destructive developments and protecting precious places, to shifting the national conversation on climate and nature. Her legacy is one of bold action, deep care, and unwavering commitment to people and planet. She leaves ACF stronger, more vibrant, and more influential than ever.
ACF is in a strong position — financially secure, culturally vibrant, and ready to have even greater impact. If you’re ready to lead a movement, shape the national agenda, and help build a future where nature and people thrive — we want to hear from you.
