Join Australia’s first bank shareholder resolution on deforestation
Why is ACF filing a shareholder resolution?
Australia is a global deforestation hotspot – more forest is bulldozed here each year than for Indonesia’s entire palm oil sector. This destruction is driving species like the koala towards extinction and putting our climate, water and soil at risk.
Behind most of this deforestation lies a bank. ANZ and NAB are among the biggest funders of companies driving deforestation in Australia. But together, we can change this.
This year, ACF is partnering with ethical share trading platform SIX to file the first-ever shareholder resolutions on deforestation for Australian banks.
Shareholder resolutions are a powerful tool. They shine a spotlight on key issues at their Annual General Meetings, elevating the issue and forcing boards and executives to respond publicly to their investors and the media. Even small groups of shareholders coming together can spark change.
What does the resolution ask of the banks?
- Come clean on how much money they are lending to customers involved in deforestation, and
- Put in place a clear policy to stop funding deforestation, in line with global standards.
Westpac has shown the way by setting a science-aligned no deforestation commitment for beef, sheep and dairy. Now, with your help, we can push ANZ and NAB to follow.
How you can help
If you’re an ANZ or NAB shareholder, or want to purchase shares, you can join this historic action by co-filing the resolution.
Here’s how it works:
- Fill in the form to let us know if you hold shares in ANZ or NAB.
- If you select that you’re a shareholder, you’ll then be taken directly to a simple agency agreement form hosted by our campaign partner SIX. This makes you an official co-filer of the resolution.
- If you select that you’re interested in the campaign or becoming a shareholder in the future, you’ll be taken to a page outlining what you can do next.
- Our team will keep you updated as the resolution moves forward.
Together, we can hold the banks accountable and shift the flow of money away from nature destruction, and towards a future where forests, wildlife and communities thrive.
