Siemens has trashed its claim to be a responsible corporate citizen that cares about stopping climate change.

In response to Adani’s announcement that it has signed a deal with Siemens to help build the rail line for the Carmichael coal mine, Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) Senior Campaigner, Christian Slattery, said:

“In doing a dirty deal with Adani to help build the rail line for its massive new thermal coal mine, Siemens has trashed its claim to be a responsible corporate citizen that cares about stopping climate change.

“It is the height of corporate recklessness to sign a deal that helps build a massive new thermal coal project just as climate change-fueled bushfires are threatening homes and choking Australian cities.

“The millions of Australians who oppose the Adani mine won’t forget that Siemens is helping accelerate the global warming that is fuelling worse fires, drought and heatwaves by backing in the expansion of the coal industry.

“We know the prospect of doing a deal with Adani made many of Siemens’ own staff uncomfortable. Managers at Siemens have effectively just told staff their views don’t matter.

“This decision also flies in the face of the growing global push from institutional investors who are demanding companies like Siemens transition away from dirty fossil fuels in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.”
