Australia has one of the highest extinction rates in the world and this crisis is not just happening in remote areas. Urban areas can support rich biodiversity, including many threatened species that depend on our urban canopy and green spaces to thrive.
Sydney’s inner west is home to unique wildlife like our mascot, the Grey-headed flying-fox. Yet, the crucial canopy that sustains these species is vanishing, putting our wildlife at risk.
Between 2020 to 2022 alone, our LGA saw a loss of 29 hectares of tree canopy coverage. That’s equivalent to over 40 soccer fields worth of coverage.
Loss of canopy does not just impact our native species; it also affects our quality of life as residents. Trees are essential in our urban environment to purify the air, moderate temperatures, provide cooling shade, manage stormwater and capture carbon.
Sign ACF Community Inner West's petition to urge the Inner West Council to
Make a clear public commitment to its tree canopy target in line with the 40% tree canopy target set by the NSW Government for Greater Sydney
Provide regular, easily-accessible reporting about tree canopy coverage and planning and progress of its tree planting program on a dedicated page of the Council website.
