As it stands, our nature laws leave major loopholes that continue to allow rogue bulldozing of forests and bush and unchecked ministerial discretion. In their current form, these bills do not protect nature.

The Coalition has offered, what is frankly, a terrible deal to pass these bills. We must be clear: Labor cannot partner with the Coalition on this, or nature loses out.

Australia’s national nature laws must protect Australia's immense natural wealth: bush, rivers, reefs and wildlife. Caving in to the changes demanded by the no-net-zero Coalition will only take nature protection backwards.

Across the country everyday Australians are watching nature being destroyed in real time. Whether it's devastating algal blooms in SA, bulldozed koala habitat in NSW or careless clearing for fossil fuels in WA, the story is the same – our laws are failing nature.

Right now, we have a choice. We can let this play out in Parliament, and allow for these weak laws to be passed, and watch the continued destruction of our species, lands and waters until there’s nothing left.

Or we can be a voice for the voiceless and do everything we can to allow Australian nature a fighting chance.

Now is the critical time for Parliamentarians to improve them, not weaken them. That’s why ACF has today released an assessment of exactly how to fix this broken legislation.

With the essential changes we’ve recommended, the Parliament can turn this package into the strong, enforceable nature laws Australians expect. Without them, nature loses. Check out the details here.

Put simply, this is how we can fix the Albanese government’s draft nature laws:

Remove the discretionary powers that undermine the new rules that protect nature.

Guarantee independent, federal decision-making through a National EPA.

Protect the bush by closing loopholes that enable forest destruction.

Stop climate harm and ensure coal and gas is not fast-tracked.

Ensure public scrutiny and First Nations engagement.

Let’s speak loudly for nature!

Thank you for standing up for nature!

Now let's make sure your voice is heard loud and clear in Canberra.

The next few weeks are critical. Senators need to hear from everyday Australians demanding these laws are strengthened before they're locked in.
