Sign the open letter: Fix nature laws now!

After years of delays and broken promises, Labor has just introduced new nature laws to Parliament. But they’re not good enough. This might be our last chance to get this right.

Across the country everyday Australians are watching nature being destroyed in real time. Whether it's devastating algal blooms in SA, bulldozed koala habitat in NSW or careless clearing for fossil fuels in WA, the story is the same – our laws are failing nature.

Right now, we have a choice. We can let this play out in Parliament, and allow for these weak laws to be passed, and watch the continued destruction of our species, lands and waters until there’s nothing left. 

Or we can be a voice for the voiceless and do everything we can to allow Australian nature a fighting chance. 

The draft laws tabled have too many loopholes that benefit big polluters and bulldozers.  This is the biggest nature law reform in a generation, and Parliament has to get it right.

A proper Senate inquiry is needed to ensure Australia’s national nature law actually does what it says on the tin: protects nature.

Parliament will debate on Labor’s proposed nature laws in the coming weeks. There’s no time left – we need to PUSH NOW.

We are demanding that these laws:

✅ Stop extinctions and restore nature so animals, people and communities can thrive.   

✅ End the deforestation loopholes that enable rogue bulldozing of our forests and woodlands. 

✅ Independent and accountable decision making that stops big polluter dodging the law and ends illegal bulldozing.

✅ Embeds climate harm in decision-making, to protect communities and wildlife from bleaching, algae blooms, fires and floods.
