The standard you walk by is the standard you accept.
Environment Minister Murray Watt recently released the Albanese Government’s draft new National Environmental Standards, and they don’t deliver for nature.
In reforming Australia’s nature law last year, the Albanese Government promised stronger protections for threatened animals, forests and reefs – the Standards are the backbone of these.
In Minister Watt’s own words these Standards will “set the boundaries for decisions, to ensure they deliver improved environmental outcomes”. They’re essentially the checklist decision makers will use to give the red light or green light to major projects that could have an impact on nature🚦.
But as they stand, the draft Standards will lock in nature’s ongoing decline. They could justify almost any project put forward by the likes of Alcoa or Santos who we know don’t have nature’s best interests at heart.
Australia is a world leader in destroying forests. No other country has sent more mammals to extinction. Australia cannot afford to have low standards for protecting the nature we all need.
That’s why, we’re calling for National Environmental Standards that will:
- 🌳Protect forests from being bulldozed
- 🐨Keep threatened species’ homes safe and
- 🌏Account for the impacts of climate change
And you can too.
Take one minute to send an email to Murray Watt and tell him to lift his standards!
