The federal Environment Minister has indicated that she will approve a new coal mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.
This is the first new coal mine approval from the Albanese Government that promised “climate action” would be its legacy.
This decision is indefensible.
It's up to all of us to push our government to deliver bolder climate action now.
Sign the petition urging the Australian government to end new climate-heating coal and gas projects and infrastructure in Australia.
"To the Prime Minister, Energy Minister and Environment Minister,
End coal and gas in Australia to ramp up climate action. That means:
- This decade, replacing existing coal, gas and uranium exports with a renewable-powered exports industry and climate-positive careers for communities
- No new coal and gas projects or infrastructure
- Stop spending public money on the fossil fuel industry – fund climate solutions instead."
A responsible government would use our public money to make our communities and wildlife thrive, not fund the industries damaging our climate. The Albanese Government has already taken some steps to advance climate ambition in Australia, but to truly slash climate pollution it must immediately end public funding for fossil fuels.
In the 2021-22 financial year, government subsidies for fossil fuels cost Australians $11.6 billion. In the same period, climate-fuelled floods devastated communities and wildlife in Queensland and New South Wales.
If we stop spending public money on fossil fuels now, we can help prevent even more damaging projects in the future. Currently, Australia has 114 new coal and gas projects, like Woodside's Scarborough project, in the pipeline and if the projects were to go ahead they would almost double our current domestic emissions. And that’s not including any emissions from exporting the coal and gas overseas!
For a safe climate future, let’s instead invest our public money into renewable exports that can replace coal and gas, slash pollution and create climate-positive jobs that future-proof our economy.
Sign the petition and call on our government to step up for climate action.
I don’t want a cent of my taxes or public money spent on the fossil fuel industry. Please, for the sake of all of Earth’s inhabitants, fund climate solutions instead.
Just read Dark Emu and bow your heads in shame
I want coal mines to be abolished let alone add more.
Albanese only cares about businesses and inflicting respiratory complications to the poor.
He’s not labour – that’s a fates.
The most liberal ( posing as labour) leader yet.
A leader for the rich including mining companies
They r destroying our planet
The tipping point of 1.5 degrees of global warming has almost been reached. There is no more time to pander to the greed of fossil fuel corporations. End climate damaging industries now so that our children can have a future.
This seems counterproductive – we should be closing not opening new mines.
Please end approval of new coal and gas as we need to transition to renewables before it is too late.
The science is telling us that we are at a global warming crisis. Burning fossil coal and fossil gas it the biggest causer of our planet warming to dangerous levels where life will become extremely difficult.
We must STOP NOW burning fossil fuels. I want my grandchildren to have a future and to be proud of our beautiful planets biodiversity.
I want Australia to end coal and gas because the young generation deserve to inherit a planet worth living in.
I want a healthy earth and future for my children
This is utterly incompatible with a commitment to keeping global heating below 1.5C. Worsening climate change will cause humanitarian crisis beyond our worst nightmares.
All Fossil Fuels usage must cease as soon as possible, like NOW.
Fossil fuel executives are only interested in personal wealth and power; they don’t even care about the Australia that their own grandchildren will inherit.
Well I am ! I want my grandchildren to experience the same Australia that I have been privileged to enjoy.
Please, no more coal or gas developments.
I know the complications about energy in a resource dependent country like Australia but this dependency has to stop and programs to change or restrict fossil fuel energy has to be controlled before the control is taken out of our hands by an increasing massive climate change disaster. P.M. Albanese you will have to have the courage, despite electoral disapproval, to make the change for us all.
