"To the Prime Minister, Energy Minister, Environment Minister and Treasurer:
End coal and gas in Australia to ramp up climate action. That means:
- This decade, replacing existing coal, gas and uranium exports with a renewable-powered exports industry and climate-positive careers for communities
- No new coal and gas projects or infrastructure
- Stop spending public money on the fossil fuel industry – fund climate solutions instead."
A responsible government would use our public money to make our communities and wildlife thrive, not fund the industries damaging our climate. The Albanese Government has already taken some steps to advance climate ambition in Australia, but to truly slash climate pollution it must immediately end public funding for fossil fuels.
In the 2022-23 financial year, government subsidies for fossil fuels cost Australians $11.1 billion.
If we stop spending public money on fossil fuels now, we can help prevent even more damaging projects in the future. Currently, Australia has 114 new coal and gas projects, like Woodside's Scarborough project, in the pipeline and if the projects were to go ahead they would almost double our current domestic emissions. And that’s not including any emissions from exporting the coal and gas overseas!
For a safe climate future, let’s instead invest our public money into renewable exports that can replace coal and gas, slash pollution and create climate-positive jobs that future-proof our economy.

Enough is enough! Generating energy from fossil fuel is killing our planet, all in the name of money and greed. As an Australian born citizen and Taxpayer, I say no to expanding Gas and Coal industries in Australia. And I say no to spending public money on the fossil fuel industry. I urge the Australian Government to move towards innovation and renewable energies instead of the stale and parochial approach that it is currently taking. Frankly I feel embarrassed to be Australian. The lack of foresight and blatant ignorance the Australian Government is manifesting concerning climate change is deplorable. We are so desperately running out of time. Our planet is much sicker than we think. If drastic action is not taken it will soon be too late.

Instead of spending money on fossil fuel, we should invest in renewable energy! Australia is such a sunny place, with lots of great and suitable weather conditions for renewable energy solutions (such as solar panels and wind farms). Why is it that we are one of the most behind major countries when it comes to sustainable energy>
Australia’s public monies must not be spent subsidising dirty energy sources – fossil fuels. 100% of those funds should instead go to clean energy sources like solar and wind farms.
Please end fossil fuel extraction expansion, and instead invest more in renewables, and lobby our trading partners who purchase our fossil fuel exports to do the same, in respect for the climate science that compels this action.
