Lodge a missing creature alert with your Member of Parliament

Missing_Creature_Report__600px_SwiftParrot.jpg

Swift parrots breed in the nesting hollows in big old trees in Tasmania, then fly north in winter. In search of nectar, they cross Bass Strait in small groups. When there’s lots of eucalyptus flowers, they congregate in huge colourful flocks – but in dry years they have to travel far and wide.

Habitat destruction means the fastest parrot in the world is on a rapid path to extinction.

Will you lodge a missing creature alert with your local Member of Parliament? Tell them we need strong national environment laws to protect the places and wildlife we love – and ask them to raise this with their party leader.

Fill out the webform with your name and why you care. We'll print your name and message on a special missing creature alert and post it to your local MP. If you prefer, you can print and post it yourself.

Australia has one of the highest rates of extinction in the world. The government has not done nearly enough to protect our native fauna such as the Swift parrot for the future generations to enjoy. The people of Australian expect and demand much better and action now!

Please take immediate action to ensure all of our biodiverse systems are safe from any kind of destruction, and that the country is supported to regenerate its indigenous ecosystems that support all life, including human. There is much evidence that points to the urgent need for this to occur, and I am sure that as a well-informed individual and someone who represents our community you are well-versed with the science.

A national shame the continued annihilation of native species in this country.
ACT NOW TO SAVE THESE PRECIOUS CREATURES.
Be a custodian of this species not in ignorance.

We need stronger environmental laws to protect these endangered species. They are as important as any one of us.

Because our animals are struggling and no one seems to care. Yet no one realises when they are gone they are gone. Let’s stop being silly and actually
Protect the animals that where here before us!!!!

Because we are slaughtering the earth and need to stop overproduction and overconsumption by changing the laws so the BIG players abide! It’s easy to print money on paper but you can’t print all the animals that are extinct.

We need to protect the natural ecosystems around us before it is too late. Because if we loose these amazing systems the world as we know it will crumble and people need to realise the importance of the natural world and the negative impacts that anthropogenic processes have on it.

This is unexplainable, we have a beautiful country with outstanding wildlife and yet no respect for it. It’s time to change laws and make the future of our nation and it’s riches in wildlife great.

This seriously endangered parrot is yet another victim of land clearning and habitat removal. Continued support for developers and miners will ensure its extinction.

We need stronger environmental protection laws because it is well within the abilities of our country and political system to do so. We could be a shining example of how ecological conservation and economic growth can occur hand in hand, instead of cutting, mining and fishing our last remaining habitats for short term gain into the already full-pockets of a few business-people and politicians.

We need stronger, more effective environment protection laws to save the critically endangered Swift Parrot and many other endangered species.

Our current laws are failing as critical breeding habitat in Tasmania continues to be logged.

Please act to strengthen these laws to ensure the long term preservation of our natural environment for all Australians.

Not enough is being done to protect species, conserve habitat and ensure viability of species. Australia needs to do better.

Where are they going to nest when all their habitat is logged? How will they breed? will we just let them die out ?
Australia has the second highest Exticntion rate in the world – that is not something that seems loke progress.
My vote goes to the party with the vision to stop that extinction rate

Habitat destruction means this beautiful parrot, the fastest parrot in the world is on a rapid path to extinction!

Australia is one of the most beautiful but unfortunately we’ve become the a world leader in deforestation and instead of conserving our precious wildlife we are rapidly destroying it!

We clear seven MCGs worth of forest every day and have bulldozed, burnt and cleared over one million hectares of old growth forest in the last three years! We are Number 2 in the world for killing off our native wildlife! By logging old growth forest, we are logging ancient trees that are more than 500-800 years old. Most of these trees provide critical habitat of tree hollows in them which take at least 200 years to form and not only swift parrots but hundreds of animals such as the Leadbeater’s possum, powerful owls, antechinus, greater gliders just to name a few, depend on them for their survival!

When these forests are bulldozed and incinerated to the ground, many animals that happen to be living in the hollows or trees often die or are left with horrific crush injuries from the fall. Those that are lucky enough to avoid being caught up in the carnage are suddenly faced with other threats: homelessness, exposure to predators, starvation. Vic forests have no mercy and no idea of the impact they are having on these species- they log critical habitat that these animals depend on to survive!

Threatened species lose hectares of their habitat through logging and any regrowth is often controlled with toxic chemicals or repeated bulldozing!

Once these precious forests and species are lost there is no turning back. Gone is gone!

Australia should be ashamed for the huge number of species lost to extinction due to greed and deforestation. Turn this trend around by creating laws to protect what we have left.
