Queenslanders, our sunshine state has the tools and talent to become a renewable energy superpower – and shift away from digging and burning fossil fuels that drive climate impacts.

Ramping up climate solutions now will create long-term jobs in our regions, help restore our incredible forests and slash climate pollution this decade.

But we need to act now and not let the opportunity slip through our fingers.

Sign the petition. We need thousands of us calling on our state government to invest in making Queensland a climate and nature champion.

Working together, Queensland CAN!

To learn more about how we replace coal and gas with clean energy and create jobs in future industries now, explore the Queensland CAN! report commissioned by ACF, the Queensland Conservation Council and World Wildlife Fund Australia.

Petition demands

We call upon the Queensland Government to:

  • Make our climate safe: Slash Queensland's climate pollution by at least half this decade; slash methane emissions from existing coal and gas infrastructure; ban new coal and gas infrastructure
  • Protect our nature: Establish an Environmental Protection Authority for Queensland; protect 100 hectares of Queensland forest this decade
  • Clean up our exports and create green jobs: Create a renewable-powered exports industry to replace coal and gas exports, with 100,000 climate-positive careers for communities; guarantee jobs for fossil fuel workers

Jobs we can create in climate solutions

I want Queensland to be a climate and nature champion because it has the potential to become a renewable energy superpower, the land to do so, beautiful nature as well, the people power to achieve this, and because it is the way forward going into the future and we don’t want to be left behind.

Queensland can become a nature champion when they stop supporting coal mining, create transitional jobs for miners and truely climate change
Amanda 2022-09-16 21:02:57 +1000
The scientists predicted global warming, caused by excess greenhouse gas in our atmosphere, would bring climate change. Time has proven them to be correct. It’s here. It’s killing people.

No more flip flopping about what action to take. Follow the science and act now on fast change to clean energy. I will not vote for any political party which does not take decisive and immediate action to transition to 100% clean energy well before 2050 . I will actively campaign against any party seen to be halfhearted in it’s actions to achieve this goal.

I want Queensland to become a climate and nature champion because change has to start from the top. Big polluting companies need legally backed policy changes to ensure that environmentally sound decisions. No more coal mines, no mines endangering ground water and the Great Barrier Reef. No more oil ridges off our coasts. More financial backing for technology advances and systematic change for sustainable practices across all parts of society.

It’s time for us to shift away from digging and burning fossil fuels that drive climate impacts like extreme floods and droughts.

We are the sunshine state; we also have many, many remote communities and families that benefit from having access to renewable energy rather than trying – at incredible expense – to link them to the power-grid (which links can be disrupted by our natural disasters such as cyclones and bushfires) or having them rely on generators that use incredibly-expensive (and difficult to transport, esp in The Wet) fossil fuels. We should be investing bigtime in solar power and also in research to develop better – and cheaper – household/ community-level battery banks/ energy storage devices. We should be moving right away from our deadly addiction to / dependence on income from selling fossil fuels which then produce emissions that are destroying the biosphere… and by extreme fire, drought and floods causing HUGELY expensive damage to livelihoods and infrastructure. (And the large-scale mining of those fuels ALSO destroys the environment; I am HORRIFIED that the irreplaceable and lovely Bimble Box reserve, for example, could be sacrificed to the Great God Coal and $$$; because that sets a very, very, very bad example.. it means that NOTHING – not even a nature reserve that is supposed to be protected in perpetuity – is safe if a mining magnate can bulldoze it to make a fast buck. It means that at the stroke of a pen good farmland, pasture, forests and supposedly-protected national parks or nature reserves can be shredded and turned into dead holes in the ground for short-term profit. Clean air, good soil, clean water – healthy waterways and wetlands, aquifers and groundwater reserves – and glorious biodiversity MUST be prioritised, ALWAYS. )
