Queenslanders, we have an incredible opportunity.

We know that our state's coal and gas is contributing to immense global climate harm - fuelling more severe droughts, floods, fires and storms across our communities and inflicting catastrophic damage on our precious Great Barrier Reef.

We're seeing that wherever in the world our gas and coal is burnt, whether it's here or overseas, we pay a terrible price at home.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

Our Sunshine State has the skills and the opportunity to transform itself into a renewable energy superpower, creating long-term jobs and economic security for our regions, and helping to restore and protect the natural places we all love.

But we must act now - to stop new coal and gas projects, to turn away from fossil fuel exports and to slash emissions.

Sign the petition. We need everyone to call on our state government to invest in making Queensland a climate and nature champion.

Working together, Queensland CAN!

To learn more about how we can ditch fossil fuels and create jobs in future industries now, explore the Queensland CAN! report commissioned by ACF, the Queensland Conservation Council and World Wildlife Fund Australia.

Petition demands

We call upon the Queensland Government to:

  1. Slash Queensland’s climate pollution by at least half this decade
  2. Make Queensland a renewable energy superpower and create 100,000 jobs in climate solutions
  3. Protect Queensland’s nature to store carbon and establish an Environmental Protection Authority for Queensland to oversee and investigate environmental decisions

Jobs we can create in climate solutions

I am a woman in my late 70s and a retired
GP. I want Queensland to be a climate and nature leader because I want my grandchildren and their children to see the Great Barrier Reef and koalas and black cockatoos and know that greater gliders are still in our forests. These will not be possible if action is not taken now.
Respectfully,
Aldyth Love

We need to create sustainable future focused industries and jobs . This can only happen if the government leads and provides the opportunities for businesses to invest. Our future depends on this forward thinking and bravery. It is difficult to take a path away from the usual one, but it must be done.

They don’t call us the sunshine state for no reason — we are perfectly equipped to rapidly transition to renewables and cut off dependency to polluting energy sources. We have to unite to protect our natural resources like the Great Barrier Reef and our tropical rainforests, and prevent further erosion of what little fertile topsoil Australia has. Our tourism, agriculture, and townships depend on us to prevent further climate catastrophes like floods, fires, bleaching events, and droughts.

I really think Queensland could lead the way by investing in renewables, by stopping coal mines, by tightening up laws regarding land clearing and protecting the beautiful and valuable natural environment that we have. Please make it a priority- for us, our children and the hood of the world. Sincerely- Sheila Woodward

We will have the world’s attention on us during the Olympics in 2032, just ten short years away. Let’s show Queensland as a shining example for the world, rather than a state riding on the profits of unethical mining and without a care for the future of the planet.

The recent bushfires and floods have demonstrated the consequences of failing to take sufficient action to address the impacts of burning fossil fuels. Unless Australia takes more drastic action to address the impacts of climate change, the consequences for our children and grandchildren are likely to be dire.
