The Morrison Government plans to weaken our brightest renewable funds – the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) – to let them splash cash into fossil fuels

Investors won’t back gas – neither should Australian taxpayers.

Independent and Centre Alliance representatives in our Parliament are powerful voices for public policy in the public interest. They can do a great job in holding the Government accountable.

Their voices and their votes will be critical in the next three months as we work to keep our brightest renewable energy funds clean – and stop the Coalition giving public money to their mates in gas!

We call on Independent MPs Helen Haines, Zali Steggall, Andrew Wilkie and Rebecca Sharkie (Centre Alliance), and crossbench Senators Jacqui Lambie, Rex Patrick and Stirling Griff (Centre Alliance) to use their voices and votes and stand up for the Clean Energy Finance Corporation by:

  • Keep our clean energy agencies clean – don’t change their remit to support fossil fuels.
  • Maintain their independence – don’t give the Minister powers to override investment decisions of the independent board
  • Retain the requirement to deliver a return on investment to Australians – investors won’t back gas, and neither should taxpayers.

Let’s encourage Independents in the House of Representatives to use their voices to speak up for the public interest, as they have on so many important issues.

And let’s encourage Independents in the Senate to use their votes to protect our clean energy funds, as they have in the past.

We are in a climate emergency. As UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “We are in a deep climate hole, and to get out, we must first stop digging”. Backing gas is digging us into a deeper climate hole.

If the market cannot deliver gas, we should not be subsidizing it. We should be putting money into future energy including upgrading the grid to manage more renewable energy and if prices rise in the short term, they will be lower in the longer term while the danger to the climate will also be reduced and more jobs created

There is nothing more important at this time than to protect our environment and laws which allow this to be done.

We need to cohesively and comprehensively get behind a green energy fueled future. My vote is for protecting and promoting our investment in green energy and in turn protecting and promoting our planet. I reject any changes to the CEFC bill.

For the sake of every citizen, Australia needs to fully embrace and transition to clean energy as soon as practical. Please do not allow the Morrison Government to weaken the Clean Energy Finance Corporation and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency. Don’t give the Minister the power to override the investment decisions of their independent boards and retain the requirement to deliver a return on investments.
I urge you to please speak up for the public interest.

The environment is getting dirtier and already vast numbers of people world wide are becoming sick and dying from pollution-related diseases. It is also becoming dangerously warmer. We simply cannot afford to persist with fossil fuels – coal and gas. Climate scientists and environmental health specialists are telling us that we have to act urgently!

Taking funds from renewables to support gas is wrong. These funds should be directed as originally intended.

As a young Aussie, I’m pretty upset that the people running our country are making decisions, which appear to have selfish motivations behind them, that will impact my life negatively long after they’ve left this world.
Clean energy is the way to go and everybody knows it!

Our wetlands are under threat every where. They are vital for water health and wildlife. No building or development should occur near them.
