The Morrison Government plans to weaken our brightest renewable funds – the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) – to let them splash cash into fossil fuels

Investors won’t back gas – neither should Australian taxpayers.

Independent and Centre Alliance representatives in our Parliament are powerful voices for public policy in the public interest. They can do a great job in holding the Government accountable.

Their voices and their votes will be critical in the next three months as we work to keep our brightest renewable energy funds clean – and stop the Coalition giving public money to their mates in gas!

We call on Independent MPs Helen Haines, Zali Steggall, Andrew Wilkie and Rebecca Sharkie (Centre Alliance), and crossbench Senators Jacqui Lambie, Rex Patrick and Stirling Griff (Centre Alliance) to use their voices and votes and stand up for the Clean Energy Finance Corporation by:

  • Keep our clean energy agencies clean – don’t change their remit to support fossil fuels.
  • Maintain their independence – don’t give the Minister powers to override investment decisions of the independent board
  • Retain the requirement to deliver a return on investment to Australians – investors won’t back gas, and neither should taxpayers.

Let’s encourage Independents in the House of Representatives to use their voices to speak up for the public interest, as they have on so many important issues.

And let’s encourage Independents in the Senate to use their votes to protect our clean energy funds, as they have in the past.

New fracking for gas is not only expensive, it can destroy groundwater. Add to this that renewables can do the job, and we have to ask: “Who really benefits from new fossil fuel projects?”

We and our descendants are all harmed by the use of coal and gas, locally and globally. And now, renewable energy has become the economic as well as the healthy way to make electricity, transport and just about everything. Mostly no R&D is required, the technologies are here now. We just need to start encouraging investment by setting some targets to get people, communities and businesses to get organised and investing. This is urgent and very do-able!

There is no logical, scientific, virtue-based reason not to proceed with the change to sustainable, renewable energy. Money and corruption are the only obstacles. This move creates jobs, generates income in the long-term and ensures a viable future for generations to come. You’re not pulling wool over anyone’s eyes.
