The Morrison Government plans to weaken our brightest renewable funds – the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) – to let them splash cash into fossil fuels

Investors won’t back gas – neither should Australian taxpayers.

Independent and Centre Alliance representatives in our Parliament are powerful voices for public policy in the public interest. They can do a great job in holding the Government accountable.

Their voices and their votes will be critical in the next three months as we work to keep our brightest renewable energy funds clean – and stop the Coalition giving public money to their mates in gas!

We call on Independent MPs Helen Haines, Zali Steggall, Andrew Wilkie and Rebecca Sharkie (Centre Alliance), and crossbench Senators Jacqui Lambie, Rex Patrick and Stirling Griff (Centre Alliance) to use their voices and votes and stand up for the Clean Energy Finance Corporation by:

  • Keep our clean energy agencies clean – don’t change their remit to support fossil fuels.
  • Maintain their independence – don’t give the Minister powers to override investment decisions of the independent board
  • Retain the requirement to deliver a return on investment to Australians – investors won’t back gas, and neither should taxpayers.

Let’s encourage Independents in the House of Representatives to use their voices to speak up for the public interest, as they have on so many important issues.

And let’s encourage Independents in the Senate to use their votes to protect our clean energy funds, as they have in the past.

Australia is well behind the rest of the world regarding urgent climate action. We need the political will to face the greatest challenge of our time, yet this is lacking. Our country needs to evolve away from fossil fuels to become a leader in renewable energy. And quickly! The government has a moral, social, economic, national and global responsibility – and to all Australians, now and future – to do all it can to restore, and protect nature and take urgent climate action through effective policies. The government needs to envision a strong and influential place for Australia as a global exporter of renewables and a leader in urgently acting to mitigate global warming.

The future is renewable energy not gas – dirty polluting gas which burnt is as bad as burning coal – a fossil fuel which has brought us to the brink of a climate catastrophe – an emergency which requires emergency action – stop burning fossil fuels now!

Let’s use our ‘competitive advantage’ in having vast renewable resources — sun, wind, waves, geothermal — to build a future for us all!

At this critical time our natural areas containing endemic plants and animals need protection. We need to help the planet stabilise and make every day count to curtail climate change.

It’s time for the Coalition Government to kick its linear economy habit, quit denying climate change is occurring and adopt a circular economy model where renewables play a pivotal role.
