Coles and Woolworths both claim they’re doing good things for our climate.
So why are these supermarkets both card-carrying members of one of Australia’s shadiest climate-wrecking lobby groups: the Business Council of Australia (BCA)? It just doesn't check out.
Over the past few decades the BCA has strategically undermined a long list of climate policies in Australia. As a result, climate pollution in this country is going up, not down like it must if we are to continue enjoying life on our beautiful planet.
By weakening the BCA’s membership, we can neutralise their influence over climate policy in Australia – and get back on track in building a future that’s good for everyone and every living thing.
Sign the open letter now asking Coles and Woolworths to leave the climate-wrecking BCA:
As customers, shareholders and employees of Coles and Woolworths, we call on the supermarket giants to leave the Business Council of Australia (BCA) – it continues to undermine climate policy in Australia and advocate for the weakening of environmental laws.
We are concerned about the climate crisis and want action.

It is the lack of environmental consideration that both Coles and Woolworths have displayed over recent years that has pushed me to take my business to competitors such as Aldi and Spudshed. From banning plastic bags only to bring in thickerplastic bags to the ridiculous mini shop and ooshies, it is clear that the environment is not something the value. This would be a move in the right direction towards proving me wrong.
I support big business being responsible corporate citizens and that means developing and supporting policy that provides good outcomes for our environment. What the point of economic prosperity if we don’t have a planet.
Corporate responsibility now.
We, the residents of Australia, want both Coles and Woolworths to do the right thing by our environment. We were pleased to see you responding positively to the plight of our dairy farmers and then the fight against plastic. But climate change is becoming the greatest challenge of the new century and we cannot let self interested lobbies like the Business Council of Australia (BCA) hijack Australia’s future.
Immediate emergency action on the climate crisis
No organisation with credible environmental credentials would belong to the Business Council of Australia. Its continued pursuit of profits for its members above any social concerns belongs to a bygone age.
