It’s time to make our democracy fair for everyone.

Sign the open letter calling on our elected representatives to work together to get big money out of our political system and put people and planet back in.

Open letter

To our elected representatives,

We call on you to work together to get big money out of our political system and put people back in.

This means:

  • Banning large donations to political parties and candidates.
  • Increasing the transparency of political donations, including real time reporting of donations.
  • Limiting expenditure at election times so corporations can’t use their oversized  wallets to drown out our voices.
  • Creating an independent watchdog to investigate and stamp out corruption.
  • Stronger lobbying regulation and greater transparency so we know who’s meeting with our elected representatives and why.

Restoring the principles of a democracy is essential by more strongly regulating political party donations and reducing the influence of big business that skews the decision making in their favour and not in the long term interests of our people and our nation.

If we don’t have a stronger democracy, we won’t be effective in tackling climate change and inequality. We’ve got to get money out of politics and get a strong ICAC.

There needs to be greater transparency and timely disclosure about all donations to political parties. A register that is updated in real time and accessible by the Australian people need to be part of the framework of our Federal democracy.

A heathy democracy is critical to government decisions in community’s interest for healthy people and healthy planet. Large and hidden influence by particular interests undermine this. Smaller and more transparent donations and influence would increase community respect for politicians.

Our current political system is marked by a deep community disillusion. There is an overwhelming case for setting up an ICAC that would report directly to the Commonwealth parliament – as does the auditor general – to disclose serious ethical breaches and corruption, and to enable sanctions to be imposed.

Coal & gas destroy the coutries that use them & they don’t recover. This has been proven by so many countries before us. We’re not sheep.

We need a democracy that works for people not a political system that works for big corporations, who invest more into fossil fuel like coal and gas, thereby creating more climate change.

Whatever happened to our government representing the interests of the people? This no longer exists.

By the government’s actions that is NO significant climate policy that will cut our emissions in the near future, and their ongoing approvals of further expansion in coal and gas investments shows that the government do not care about what the public want. Big political donations and bribes are what occur and this is wrong.

Coal, mining and gas lobbyists control Australia with their big purses and huge donations to political parties. The political parties do what the lobbyists want to keep themselves in power.
This is no democracy for the people.

Big money MUST stay out of politics!
We must ban large donations to political parties and candidates and increase the transparency of political donations.

Corruption is rife so therefore our political system and politicians cannot be trusted.
Too many deals are done ‘under the table’ without scrutiny or accountability by politicians.

Having OUR country run by the lobbyists and those in industries with money who want to destroy even more of our country is wrong. Our politicians should be protecting our country but instead they hand it over to big business to plunder it even further.

Increasing transparency in government helps to ensure that democracy is working for all people, not just the wealthy and powerful.

People are what government is for, not a cabal of the privileged. Sly money has no place in good democracy. Please stop retail politics and get on with government!

Aren’t the politicians supposed to be looking after the people of the country instead of BIG corporations and their own pockets?
Do they not realise that money wont sustain the planet or feed us? It seems that corruption and greed are the only things they are interested in these days. When and how can we stop this? We all need to make a stand and together take back what is truly important and find a TRUE LEADER that stand with and for us and our environment.

There may be some good intentions/actions in some big corporations but by & large, their focus is on profit for the company

Parliamentary lobbyists should be abandoned Election donations should also be made illegal as these current processes seek to buy favours from political parties: hence – corruption .
