To our elected representatives,
We call on you to work together to get big money out of our political system and put people back in.
This means:
- Banning large donations to political parties and candidates.
- Increasing the transparency of political donations, including real time reporting of donations.
- Limiting expenditure at election times so corporations can’t use their oversized wallets to drown out our voices.
- Creating an independent watchdog to investigate and stamp out corruption.
- Stronger lobbying regulation and greater transparency so we know who’s meeting with our elected representatives and why.

A democracy that works for the people is important to me to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of pacific nations, our children and all children yet to be born.
Janet Murray: these companies aren’t making donations because they’re nice guys – they’re doing it to increase their influence and profits, often at the expense of the rest of us!

There needs to be greater transparency and timely disclosure about all donations to political parties. A register that is updated in real time and accessible by the Australian people need to be part of the framework of our Federal democracy.
A heathy democracy is critical to government decisions in community’s interest for healthy people and healthy planet. Large and hidden influence by particular interests undermine this. Smaller and more transparent donations and influence would increase community respect for politicians.
Our current political system is marked by a deep community disillusion. There is an overwhelming case for setting up an ICAC that would report directly to the Commonwealth parliament – as does the auditor general – to disclose serious ethical breaches and corruption, and to enable sanctions to be imposed.
