It’s time to make our democracy fair for everyone.

Sign the open letter calling on our elected representatives to work together to get big money out of our political system and put people and planet back in.

Open letter

To our elected representatives,

We call on you to work together to get big money out of our political system and put people back in.

This means:

  • Banning large donations to political parties and candidates.
  • Increasing the transparency of political donations, including real time reporting of donations.
  • Limiting expenditure at election times so corporations can’t use their oversized  wallets to drown out our voices.
  • Creating an independent watchdog to investigate and stamp out corruption.
  • Stronger lobbying regulation and greater transparency so we know who’s meeting with our elected representatives and why.

Too many people are experiencing the horror of homelessness or housing stress, job insecurity, poor health as a result of this stress, exacerbated by the belief that we have a government that doesnt care. I dont think that nuclear submarines 20 years down the track can help make people feel secure.

Democracy is only a sham when controlled by a few individuals with a lot of money. The money is used to influence policy for the benefit of those with wealth.

Democracy cannot be bought.
What we have here is not true Democracy.

We are suffering the biggest flood event in recorded history, at Lismore NSW. Climate Change is definitely a factor in this disaster. By paying subsidies and receiving big money support from Fossil Fuel companies, our government is complicit in, and driving Climate Change . Labour is also supportive of Coal and Gas industries. So, Lismore will continue to suffer. This can’t go on.

Our democracy has been stolen by Corporations funding the political campaigns of both major parties. Without oversight from an integrity watchdog corruption has flourished and tax dollars used to fund global warming fossil fuel companies whilst essential services like education, health, housing, aged care, our abc, and disability services have been under resourced and workers underpaid, overworked and burnt out. I want our politicians to work for their constituents not corporates.

It is not a democracy as long as autocrats rule! Simple!

Simply using a complete solar system and backup is holding on to the really needing times of electrical and earth effecting and destructing change. All because be it won’t be in their Iives, only be the future legacy they will deliver for their liblves to hold of strong with me their family. Return the greed we seem to take over and more money means destructing in 99% of the reason anything even gets a go look nowadays

Democracy was constructed and implemented as a political scheme by which the people have all the power. Leaders are subservient to their people, meeting their wishes, protecting the interests of the country and people first of all, free from outside influences with a separation of the executive and the private.

That has failed miserably. Corruption reigns supreme, branch-stacking gave rise to our most environment-unfriendly ‘Prime Minister’ in years, and blank cheques are aplenty. It’s a disgrace, and it’s a lie. Scott, I refuse to use either his office or his surname, outright went around the back of flooded Lismore to avoid climate protestors. This man is not suitable for democracy, he’s a disgrace.

A democracy is about people, first and foremost. Declare your funding, cap and eliminate coercive funding practices from big business and big oil especially, which I KNOW funds a massive percentage of our government, in an international disgrace. Your people are calling out for climate action! Your people, the ones unable to afford the bunkers, the shelters, everything you can.

Our democracy is in shambles. Barnaby Joyce has young children, yet subjects them to a future of extinction. Scott has high-school age children also, does the EXACT SAME. They refuse to serve the people, they serve big business, they don’t serve the interests of Australians, they serve their own. 70% of this country vehemently believes that climate change is an existential threat that will wipe us out within 15-20 years, and our democracy has crumbled under blank donations, big oil infiltration, and a culture of denialism. Restore the honesty, restore the integrity, restore the common sense to invest in and protect our planet.

Kick out the liars that say we’d crash the country going green, it would save hundreds of billions of dollars in transport alone, not to mention the tens of thousands of jobs created working green energy and Carbon Capture plants, Australia can become the new Saudi Arabia, but of clean energy, but ONLY if we show the world that nature can be saved, and if nature goes, we go with it.

Wealthy companies and individuals should not be allowed to distort the democratic process. There must be a strict limit on total annual donations to a party by companies or individuals (even to their own party, e.g. Clive Palmer or previously Malcolm Turnbull).
All donations should be declared in real-time, certainly within one month.
For true democracy it should be easier for independents to compete with large parties, so public funding should be considered.

Living in the Hunter Valley I’m watching long term sustainable farming country turn to useless polluted grass mounds, short term profits for loss of long term steady income, loss of the land literally, all while polluting from coal ash around the world and cooking the planet, destroying so many species I love and value.

A democracy is all about the people so the government should be listening to us not the most powerful voices with the most money. Large donations to political parties and candidates should be banned. We need to be able to see what the donations are, there is a huge need for real time reporting of what is donated to political parties and candidates. An independent watchdog should be investigating and stamping out corruption.

Janet Murray: these companies aren’t making donations because they’re nice guys – they’re doing it to increase their influence and profits, often at the expense of the rest of us!
