It’s time to make our democracy fair for everyone. 

Sign the open letter calling on our elected representatives to work together to get big money out of our political system and put people and planet back in.

Open letter

To our elected representatives,

We call on you to work together to get big money out of our political system and put people back in.

This means:

  • Banning large donations to political parties and candidates.
  • Increasing the transparency of political donations, including real time reporting of donations. 
  • Limiting expenditure at election times so corporations can’t use their oversized  wallets to drown out our voices.
  • Creating an independent watchdog to investigate and stamp out corruption.
  • Stronger lobbying regulation and greater transparency so we know who’s meeting with our elected representatives and why.

Because all people on earth are affected by the effects of fossil fuel burning and other activities, eG deforestation, mining, intense farming practices etc etc. So whilst populations endure hardships and health problems as a result of these activities, relatively few people reap the economic gains and the political powers that they get and exercise—often to the detriment of people/s.

Its not hard to understand…….Using money to influence the leaders to help ourselves and our gang make more money more easily is just a sophisticated version of accumulating wealth for ourselves. and being unrealistic about the affects of our behaviour. What happened to sharing, to being concerned about how our actions affect others, about thinking of the longer term consequences of our ideas and behaviours.

Limiting massive donations and requiring transparency is a good step to protecting democracy.

An independent National corruption watchdog is urgently needed to promote and protect integrity in public management and communications.

It is vital to turn around a system that pays more attention to big business, whose main concern is providing profits to shareholders rather than accepting the importance of a fair distribution of resources to benefit all. This is not only in financial terms, but also in ensuring that we have a better, cleaner world to pass on to future generations.

A democratic society is a privilege meant to encompass all women, men and children regardless of economic, social, cultural, aged background, and inclusive of environmental, regional and political contexts. It is meant to be a leveller; a healthy democracy is a healthy nation, where integrity is a significant quality.

Limiting donation sizes to political party can help end the domination of political decisions by a few self interested big corporations and will facilitate democracy.

Big Corporations like the coal industry should not be allowed to sway the way politicians think and vote by donating to them large sums of money either visible or ‘dark money’.

Too many people are experiencing the horror of homelessness or housing stress, job insecurity,poor health as a result of this stress,exacerbated by the belief that we have a government that doesnt care. I dont think that nuclear submarines 20 years down the track can help make people feel secure.

Democracy is only a sham when controlled by a few individuals with a lot of money. The money is used to influence policy for the benefit of those with wealth.
