The Albanese Government has just approved three new coal mines that will generate three times the amount of Australia's annual climate pollution. Shame!
Write to our government now, demanding they stop approving new coal and gas projects and get serious about climate action.
The Albanese Government has approved:
-
The Narrabri coal project to 2066: Its construction would bulldoze 491 hectares of endangered koala habitat, and hundreds more for other threatened wildlife and plants.
-
The Mount Pleasant coal mine to 2058: This would become Australia’s biggest thermal coal mine. Traditional Owners strongly oppose it and its construction would threaten the recently discovered Hunter Valley Delma – the first legless lizard species endemic to NSW.
- Ashton coal mine to 2064.
Burning dirty coal and gas is the biggest driver of climate pollution, unleashing destructive fires, floods, and droughts on the people, plants, and animals we love.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that OECD nations like Australia must phase out coal by 2030 to keep warming below 1.5 degrees. Approving coal projects to the 2060s is unacceptable.
40% of Australia's electricity comes from solar, wind and hydro. We need more clean energy that's good for nature, not dirty and climate-polluting coal and gas.
