Dear Graham,

As constituents of Moreton, we ask you to table a Private Member’s Motion in the House of Representatives drawing attention to growing opposition within the community to the proposed Adani coal mine in the Galilee Basin of Central Queensland.

We believe the Carmichael mine should not go ahead because of the environmental damage it will cause to the Great Barrier Reef and our climate, and because of serious doubts about its economic feasibility.

We also strongly believe that funds from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility should not by loaned to Adani Group to finance the construction of a rail link from the Galilee Basin to the Abbot Point coal port.

Because of the growing threat posed by climate change, Australia should be moving rapidly towards renewable energy. We support a just transition for existing coal communities, but the world is moving on and it’s clear there should no new coal mines or coal-fired power stations.

It is fantastic that you’ll speak out against this mine. I appreciate that there is great fear in regional Queensland about jobs – the decline of the mining industry has dreadfully affected existing towns. However, the mining industry is not the answer to this problem and will, by promoting coal-induced climate change, result in the risking of 60,000 existing jobs that rely on the Great Barrier Reef to exist.

Adani has already said Carmichael will be a 24 hour, automated mine. The ‘50 years worth’ of employment the mine offers (as opposed to its construction) is for a few highly-educated professionals – not a large body of locally-based workers who feed into the local economies.

There are so many other better options for employment if the state and federal governments can think creatively! Think sustainable energy. Think effective movement of water around the state. Think northern dry farming. So many options…

And this is without mentioning climate change – or the effect on the Great barrier Reef of this.

It requires solid, forward thinking. The governments of our country need to stop using old ways of thinking. Please, please encourage the parliaments to do this.

Yours very sincerely,

Elaine Acworth

Spend the funds from the Northern Australia Infrastructure facility on renewable energy for the benefit of the whole planet not just the pockets of the current government. The government is employed by the people of this nation and the majority of it’s employers, want- a zero fossil fuel future.

The Reef needs all the help it can get – also Adani’s record is very questionable. I oppose Adani’s proposed coal mine.

The Adani coal mine project is a sham. Adani is going broke and is using Aussies to prop up his failing enterprises. QLD Gov. Is a disgrace giving the project a critical status and unlimited water for 60 years as well as a royalties sweetheart deal. It is an avoidable disaster at this stage!

Dear Mr Perrett
Thank you are a wonderful representative for your electorate. I am deeply concerned about the impact that the Adani coal mine will have on the Barrier Reef. Is Adani a company that should be trusted with such a treasure as the reef? Will you please speak out about this?
Kind regards

The adani mine will do far more damage than good. The people of North Queensland will be better off with renewable energy creating sustainable jobs!

Hi Graham
Marvellous to hear that you are going to speak out against Adani. If there was ever a dodgy and foolhardy proposal,Adani is it.
Kind Regards
