Dear Graham,

As constituents of Moreton, we ask you to table a Private Member’s Motion in the House of Representatives drawing attention to growing opposition within the community to the proposed Adani coal mine in the Galilee Basin of Central Queensland.

We believe the Carmichael mine should not go ahead because of the environmental damage it will cause to the Great Barrier Reef and our climate, and because of serious doubts about its economic feasibility.

We also strongly believe that funds from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility should not by loaned to Adani Group to finance the construction of a rail link from the Galilee Basin to the Abbot Point coal port.

Because of the growing threat posed by climate change, Australia should be moving rapidly towards renewable energy. We support a just transition for existing coal communities, but the world is moving on and it’s clear there should no new coal mines or coal-fired power stations.

Please act now to stop the long term, drastic impact that the Adani mine will have on the environment. Additionally, we must move to more renewable, cleaner energy sources.

Insane and short sighted. Of no benefit to humanity and a wast of taxpayers money.

I have spoken to you before Graham, and appreciate your interest. I first became aware that climate change was an important issue over 20 years ago when working at CSIRO, and my colleagues were maintaining a database bibliography of all the research on climate change. I was appalled many years later, when the measures that had been put in place to address climate change began to be systematically unpicked by the Abbott Government. Now, we have arrived at a place where we are contemplating this massive coal mine instead of investing the $1Billion dollars in other industries and sectors that would create plenty of jobs, and threatening our reef, water supplies and adding massively to the global carbon budget. In the words of Al Gore: “The Adani mine doesn’t have its financing, I hope it never gets its financing,” he said. “It’s not my place to meddle with your politics, but truly, this is nuts.”

Australia does not need a new coal mine as we are mining enough coal as it is and does not make economic sense to allow it to proceed and threatens viability of existing mines. A huge concern is that it is not environmentally sound and poses a further risk to the viability of the Great Barrier Reef. Further, for the Australian Government to loan public money to a huge wealthy company like Adani out of the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility is a great misuse of taxpayer funds and, I believe, an abuse of power. It should be used for the public good. This is not the public good!
