Have your say: Tell the Queensland Government they must not silence protestors
Right now, the Queensland Government is trying to make new laws that chip away at our right to peacefully protest. They are trying to silence members of the community speaking out for our living world.
The Queensland Government needs to hear from all of us who want them to uphold the right to peacefully protest.
Address your submission to the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee, and thank them for the opportunity to express your opposition to the Summary Offences and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2019.
You could mention the following reasons in your opposition to this Bill:
We are in the midst of a climate and extinction crisis. The Queensland Government should act to protect our living world – not erode our rights to protest their inaction.
The Government and police already have plenty of power when it comes to protests. There is no evidence for them needing new powers outlined in this Bill, like searching people and vehicles without a warrant.
Our Government should listen to people who speak out to stop climate damage – not criminalise certain protesters to silence dissent. This Bill introduces new ways to imprison peaceful protesters, violating fundamental democratic rights.
A good government should strive to open dialogue with the people they represent – not criminalise them.
Make a submission to tell the Queensland Government: act to stop climate damage and protect nature, not erode our rights to peacefully protest. Add your voice now.
