Since the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires, our governments have spent over $40 billion in public money supporting the continued expansion of the fossil fuel industry through subsidies and tax breaks.

Every minute, over governments hand over $21,143 to the fossil fuel industry.

It's time our governments stopped handing our public money to the industries most responsible for climate change and stopped approving new coal and gas projects. It's time to invest in a safe climate.

Sign the petition urging the Australian government to stop all subsidies and tax breaks for fossil fuels and end new climate-heating coal and gas projects and infrastructure in Australia.

Petition demands

"To the Prime Minister, Energy Minister, Environment Minister and Treasurer:

End coal and gas in Australia to ramp up climate action. That means:

  • This decade, replacing existing coal, gas and uranium exports with a renewable-powered exports industry and climate-positive careers for communities
  • No new coal and gas projects or infrastructure
  • Stop spending public money on the fossil fuel industry – fund climate solutions instead."

A responsible government would use our public money to make our communities and wildlife thrive, not fund the industries damaging our climate. The Albanese Government has already taken some steps to advance climate ambition in Australia, but to truly slash climate pollution it must immediately end public funding for fossil fuels.

In the 2022-23 financial year, government subsidies for fossil fuels cost Australians $11.1 billion.

If we stop spending public money on fossil fuels now, we can help prevent even more damaging projects in the future. Currently, Australia has 114 new coal and gas projects, like Woodside's Scarborough project, in the pipeline and if the projects were to go ahead they would almost double our current domestic emissions. And that’s not including any emissions from exporting the coal and gas overseas!

For a safe climate future, let’s instead invest our public money into renewable exports that can replace coal and gas, slash pollution and create climate-positive jobs that future-proof our economy.

Sign the petition and call on our government to step up for climate action.

I want Australia to end coal and gas because I want to live on an Earth that is healthy and not run by greedy corporations. We can do better, so we should.

Outrageous that our Government would even consider these projects in these times of disasters caused by climate change, let alone the distruction of Whale habitats

I want to end Australian coal and gas production in Darwin’s proposed Middle Arm petrochemical hub – before it starts. Stranded asset. Palmerston cancer alley. Dredging of Darwin harbour impacting marine life and local fishing. I live in Darwin. A gas hub is insane and harmful and will NOT create 20,000 jobs, it will create carbon output we cannot offset. Where is that NT government carbon offset report? The NTG will not publish it… Wow! Insanity.

I am outraged that the Albanese government, with Environment Minister Plibesek, is forging ahead with allowing and subsidising fossil fuel mining at this perilous time when the whole world knows the burning of fossil fuels is the cause of dangerous global warming. Global warming may already be too advanced to be able to arrest it. If so, run-away temperature rises will wipe out our civilisation and most life on earth. Yet you are still supporting, no, encouraging fossil fuel mining. Are you mad? Just stop it. You are supposef to be the smart ones. What you"re doing is stupid and dum. It is criminally negligent. Stop it ffs.

It is absolutely clear that our earth cannot sustain increased exploitation of fossil fuels. Heavy reliance on fossil fuels has already caused irretrievable damage to our precious planet and the living beings we share it with. It is well past time to say no to new fossil fuel extraction ventures and to direct funding instead towards less damaging renewable energy sources.

Please end this coal and oil exploration. It’s an environmental disaster to carry on this madness.

I want Australia to end approvals and public funding for new fossil fuel exploration and development, including fracking, Woodside/Santos et al, underwater seismic testing for new deposits, transport and harbour hubs, and all the other practices that are propelling our beautiful planet to a catastrophic climate change tipping point – depriving future generations of experiencing the generous beauty and wonder of our planet Earth.
Christine 2024-04-13 10:15:18 +1000
Please stop coal and gas production and find alternative sources. Future generations are going to suffer needlessly unless we do something now.

None of these commodities have any long term benefit to Australia. The ores/gas goes straight o/s and we Australians are left with either a ginormous hole in the ground or subsidence from fracking along with the destruction of our fossil water (Beetaloo, Great Artesian basin).
