Australia’s big four banks have a climate problem.

NAB, ANZ, Westpac and CommBank continue to fund huge coal and gas projects that are fuelling the climate crisis:

  • Since January 2016, ANZ has invested nearly $14 billion into fossil fuels, and $2.5 billion of this was for expansionary (new) projects. NAB, CommBank and Westpac are not far behind.
  • In November 2021, NAB and ANZ released new gas and oil lending policies that leave the door open for billions to flow to gas projects for decades to come.

The big banks talk a big game on climate, publicly supporting net zero by 2050 and promoting their investments in renewables. But solving the climate crisis means stopping funding the digging and burning of fossil fuels too.

Big banks have the unique power to direct billions into climate solutions that can drive the deep cuts to pollution needed this decade. Technologies like big batteries, electric cars and buses, and clean manufacturing are here and ready to take off.

Sign the petition to the big four banks – NAB, ANZ, Westpac and CommBank:

As community members, customers, shareholders, and employees, we call on all banks to:

  1. Commit to fully exit coal, gas and oil by 2030
  2. Take no part in new or expansionary coal, gas or oil projects.

As a loyal ANZ customer I am angry that ANZ is continuing to fund coal, oil and gas projects. To be funding expansion in these ares is uconscionable when the aim should be to lower emmissions. Emmisions cannot be lowered unless they are stopped. Offsetting eg through carbpon capture and storage is not viable and not the answer. PLEASE get out of this sector.

Im so disappointed and angry. I bank with ANZ. But will change banks if ANZ is not serious about climate change.

I have changed providers, so I’m about to change my email address and I also have a temporary phone number that will revert to the above number on the receipt of my new sim card in the next few days.

My parents just told NAB where to stick it for funding fossil fuel companies, took their funds to Bendigo Bank. My ANZ funds may go next!

This is so not good enough, ANZ. Continuing ANY support for fossil fuels of any kind is anathema. The public is roundly digusted by the po-faced hypocrisy and corporate bumph that pads out soundbites while buggering up water, buggering up the air, buggering up good land, buggering up communities and buggering up culture. What is wrong with you? We require total abstention from ANY more fossil fuel related lending, a winding down and timetable to full cessation of all fossil fuel business by Jan 1st 2030, and a 100% pivot, starting today, to 100% cleantech, renewable and community based storage and distribution systems.

The ANZ must stop this hypocracy! As a customer I shall be following what happens and if there is no change I will terminate my account there!

One of the many reasons I don’t bank with the big 4, where it’s possible.
