Australia’s big four banks have a climate problem.
NAB, ANZ, Westpac and CommBank continue to fund huge coal and gas projects that are fuelling the climate crisis:
- Since January 2016, ANZ has invested nearly $14 billion into fossil fuels, and $2.5 billion of this was for expansionary (new) projects. NAB, CommBank and Westpac are not far behind.
- In November 2021, NAB and ANZ released new gas and oil lending policies that leave the door open for billions to flow to gas projects for decades to come.
The big banks talk a big game on climate, publicly supporting net zero by 2050 and promoting their investments in renewables. But solving the climate crisis means stopping funding the digging and burning of fossil fuels too.
Big banks have the unique power to direct billions into climate solutions that can drive the deep cuts to pollution needed this decade. Technologies like big batteries, electric cars and buses, and clean manufacturing are here and ready to take off.

As community members, customers, shareholders, and employees, we call on all banks to:
- Commit to fully exit coal, gas and oil by 2030
- Take no part in new or expansionary coal, gas or oil projects.

Dear ANZ
As a shareholder and previous staff member significant other, I was very disappointed to hear that you are still investing in fossil fuels projects. You guys at the Exec level talk the talk ($5,000 push bikes) but don’t have the fortitude to stand up and say you won’t support fossil fuels. I know your bonus and personal reputations are at risk if the bottom line is impacted but we all want LEADERSHIP out of this climate mess.
I promise you the benefits are there in new energy technology and the costs are exponential as the climate heats up!!

As a shareholder in ANZ I demand that you withdraw from all coal, gas and oil financing by 2030. That includes all current and future projects
Please do what is right for the planet and all those that inhabit it
Show respect and care please for our future, stop any support to old damaging fossil fuels.
Fund our transition to a livable future! The sooner we make the switch the better of we will be! Stop wasting our time and money propping up the toxic fossil fuel industry which will become a failed asset while hastening our demise.
Please invest in the future, rather than fund a 200 year old toxic power source.
Hurry up do the right thing.
