Convergence is an empowering, two-day community training summit at Fitzroy Town Hall on 22-24 September. You’ll get the skills our community needs to take our campaigns to the next level. You’ll meet other people who are stepping up too, and form local action teams. And you’ll have a lot of fun!

GATHERING: EVENING AT GRUB FOOD VAN 

Join us at the eclectic, funky converted greenhouse Grub Food Van for a warm welcome and ample vegetarian morsels.

  • You'll get a chance to speak to like-minded people and meet our special guest (to be announced!)
  • As a group, we'll co-create our principles for how we work together on the weekend.
 

 Saturday 23 September

 WELCOME: WHY NOW MATTERS
Acknowledge and celebrate caring for country. Get fired up, skilled up and ready to go! 
  • Be warmly welcomed to country by Wurundjeri Traditional Owners. 
  • ACF's Kelly O'Shanassy will set the scene on why stopping Adani, repowering Australia, and speaking out for our air, water and wildlife matters so much right now.
 PUBLIC NARRATIVE: TELLING A POWERFUL STORY OF SELF

Learn how public narrative works and share your own story in a way that motivates others to act.

 

  • Understand storytelling as an act of leadership.
  • Practice telling your public narrative and giving feedback to others.
  • In this session, you will hear unforgettable stories from the people in the room.
CAMPAIGN STRATEGY:  HOW WE'LL WIN TOGETHER
Take a walk through ACF’s campaign strategy to stop pollution and #Repower with clean energy to protect our beautiful planet. 
  • The big picture and the inside view on our strategy.
  • Understand your role and the change you can create in your community.
COMMUNITY ORGANISING: HOW TO BUILD A MOVEMENT
Understand the fundamentals of good community organising and the role of people in making change.
  • Think about power. Identify our resources.
  • Learn the circles of commitment model to build a welcoming movement 
  • Overcome the barriers which stop people getting more involved.
LOCAL CAMPAIGN STRATEGY:  STEP BY STEP
Learn the fundamentals of good campaign strategy and how to apply them to your local campaign.
  • Create a strategy, critical path and measures of success for a local campaign.
  • Stay focused on effective strategy so your group doesn't not get distracted.
PUBLIC NARRATIVE: OUR COLLECTIVE STORY
Tell the story of our community in a way that reflects our shared values, hopes, and experiences.
  • Examine how the polluter lobby deliberately frame people who care in i.
  • Learn models for telling a powerful collective story of your group, of ACF and of our movement.

CHANGE THE STORY: CREATE DEEP, LASTING CHANGE
Together, let’s use the power of narrative to shift the public conversation and inspire people to care and act.
  • Explore why values matter and shape attitudes and behaviour.
  • Use specific, active language.
  • Dismantle the dominant story of disconnection, self-interest and despair.
  • Tell stories of connection, action and hope.
  • Find out why we often lose on the story and how to turn it around.
TEAMS: HOW TO MAKE GROUPS TICK
Understand team dynamics and get the fundamentals on how to run an effective group.

  • Form local groups and work to set team norms – the values and behaviours your group will work to.
  • Use roles to share work so your volunteering is sustainable. 
  • Transform what can be a frustrating experience to an effective one. 
LOCAL ACTION PLANNING: GET CREATIVE

In this high energy session, you'll work together to make concrete plans.

 

  • Create tactics and a timeline to reach your local goals.
  • Plan your kick off action and assign roles to deliver it.
PRACTICAL SKILLS: CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
Apply tangible, practical skills to get local outcomes.
  • Learn how to engage media from former Fairfax environment reporter Tom Arup.
  • Plan effective advocacy meetings with your elected representatives.
  • Get a formula for running great events where more than the usual suspects show up from community organising legend Max Smith.
  • Spark your creative activism with former film festival director and mobilisation guru Livia Cullen.
PULLING IT TOGETHER: THE ART OF CONVERSATION
Understand the different types of conversations we have and their purpose and use them to pull together all you’ve learned.
  • Have enjoyable and persuasive conversations.
  • Practice the "four C's" model of conversations that get commitment.
CLOSING CIRCLE: REFLECTIONS

Reflect on your experience over the weekend and share your thoughts.
