It’s important that we know the situation for nature around us. With so many plants and flowers in bloom, birds courting and nesting, now is the perfect time to learn and practise how to use the iNaturalist app on your phone to record the diversity of your local area.

When you see an animal or a bird, a plant or a fungus have you wondered what it’s called and whether it is rare or common? It might not have occurred to you that there are scientists who could use your observation of a species at a particular place and time.   With iNaturalist your photos can contribute to all these things.

As discussed at our group meeting last Wednesday Chisholm group will have a Zoom session to introduce the iNaturalist app and how to use it for citizen science observation.

If you are not already a member of the iNaturalist community in preparation for the session please:

  1. Add INaturalist to your phone (from your Appstore), Ipad OR computer here: https://www.inaturalist.org/
  2. Watch this short tutorial from INaturalist (1:24min): https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/video+tutorials
  3. Open the APP and Setup up a username for yourself.

For more iNaturalist training here are two other useful resources:

1.       A short guide to iNaturalist by Yarra Ranges iNaturalist How To Video – Yarra Ranges
2.       A longer more in depth look at iNaturalist (from the 2021 City Nature Challenge): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge-8KFWhf6E&t=361s
