Our Community is very disappointed in the lack of commitment to Climate Justice by our Federal Government. Science and the Glasgow pact are very clear on the need for strong emission reductions of more than 50% by 2030.
We are holding regular actions asking for science based 2030 targets on Friday mornings. We have been visiting a number of other locations throughout the electorate and now we are returning to outside Chisholm MP Gladys Liu's office.
Today we are joining an event called "Faith Push For Climate In Chisholm” lead by: ARRCC Australian Religious Response to Climate Change, as part of Chisholm Climate Alliance.
The action will include:
* Silent Quaker meditation on the grassy north side of road.
* Buddhist meditations.
* The Melbourne Climate Choir with songsheets for participants
* Faith Leaders from the electorate speaking * Other Faith Leaders
* Banners and individual signs.
* Media recording of candidates who show up, as well as participants.
* Public media will be invited
* Media action by ARRCC ( FB, Twitter, etc)
All Chisholm candidates will have been given the info below and our ask. We invite them to come and answer this question.
The basis of the action is this:
“The climate crisis is now more urgent than ever. The IPCC now tells us that the world needs to cut emissions this by 50% by 2030 or we will face catastrophic consequences, and that waiting until beyond that date will not save us. On Easter weekend 37 Christian leaders put out an Easter statement calling for all political parties to commit to exactly this - a 50% reduction - and signatories included President of the Uniting Church Assembly, the President of the National Council of Churches, Bishops Kate Prowd and Philip Huggins of Melbourne, the Anglican Archbishop of Perth, and both the Anglican and Catholic Archbishops of Brisbane. The current government's target is roughly half that - 26 to 28% by 2030 - and the Labor Party comes in at 43% by that date. Will you push your party to commit to a target of 50% or better by 2030?”
Please bring your own sign plus a facemask and hand sanitiser if possible. Obey local regulations for Covid Safety at all times. Do not attend if you are unwell.
