This week we've learned that tech company Siemens is considering a dirty deal with Adani.

Adani needs a company to install signalling on the 200km railway it will use to transport coal to the coast. Only a few companies in Australia can do this work – and all except Siemens have ruled it out!

Call any (or all!) of these Siemens offices and ask them to leave a message for Jeff Connolly (CEO Siemens Australia & Pacific) and Raphaelle Guerineau (CEO Siemens Mobility Australia & New Zealand). Ask them to rule out working on the climate-wrecking project.

Report back on your call so we can count our impact.

1. Siemens Australia Head Office – (03) 9721 2000
2. Siemens Mobility Melbourne Office (03) 9616 9000
3. Siemens Corporate Enquiries – 137 222

Calling tips

  • Be friendly and polite! Our concern is with Siemens' decision to work with Adani, not its employees.
  • These calls don't have to be long – the sheer number of calls is what will have an impact, so feel free to make it quick so you can get through as many as you can!
  • You may be asked to direct your message to their website – you can politely decline that, and leave your message with the staff member you are speaking to.
  • Ask directly for Siemens to rule out work on Adani's coal mine and rail project. Climate damage is here, now – we must end digging and burning coal.

Talking points

Remember, you don't need to be an expert on climate damage or anything else! You have a right to make this call and share your concerns about Siemens supporting a climate-wrecking project. Here are some talking points to help your call:

  • Share your support for Siemens committing to the Paris Agreement to keep global temperature rise well below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. Remind Siemens that helping Adani dig up and export coal for burning is incompatible with the Paris Agreement.
  • Mention that burning coal is the biggest cause of climate damage – and the Adani mine would open the Galilee Basin to one of the biggest expansions of coal mining on planet Earth.
  • Suggest that by backing clean energy and refusing to work on dangerous projects like coal mines, companies like Siemens can provide solutions to the climate crisis – not be part of the problem.

Dear CEO,

I have just received the news that Siemens has finally agreed to finance Adani’s coal railway.

I need to express my profound disapproval of your decision in doing so.
I would like ask you, how many shareholders approved your decision?
What is the benefit and real return to your shareholders in financing a corrupt company such as Adani?

Your decision to do business with a company that has a poor business reputation through out the world only confirms that you and Siemens are willing to do business at any cost and treat shareholders and those who have exposed Adani’s corrupt culture with absolute contempt.

You have sent the world the message that all business is good despite over 60 companies including banks walking away from Adani . After many rejections Adani announced that they would fully fund their project with their own money and yet they have the audacity to source some else’s money which in my view is a sure sign that they are exploiting the tax system and shareholders funds.

Surely Siemens could have financed a much more worthy and less risky project.

I am sue that your decision has attracted the attention of every Ethical investment Fund who will now revise their view of Siemens.

A Shareholders on the other hand will need to ask themselves is it good business in doing business with such a corrupt company and should they trust the CEO and Board ?

Have you forgotten who owns the company and who’s money you are using to pay your self?

Was it so necessary for Siemens to accept, did you give your shareholders the opportunity to express their views?

Will Adani burn Siemens?

Sincerely,

Richard Bertoldo

I think they must be getting used to these calls – the receptionist sounded very blase and said that my message would be passed on. She at least pretended to take the message. I’m sure doing this stuff is not futile – and at least it’s better than doing nothing.

I rang for Jeff Connolly and went straight to voice mail. I left a message asking for Jeff to reverse his decision. I said Adani was bad for the environment and bad for Siemens reputation. I asked them to use the skill and expertise to work on renewable projects and to electrify railways. The v/m said they would respond the next business day.

Cheers, keep up the good work.

I rang for Raphaelle Guerineau, and left a message with the receptionist. I said much the same as above.

reminder that call was being recorded. I said that was great because I had quite a lot to say and she wouldn’t have to write it down for Jeff Connolly. Said I couldn’t go outside, too smoky, Fires a direct result of climate change. 20,000 people marched in Sydney yesterday to demand climate action. As a reputable company Siemens shouldn’t be part of the Adani coal mine.

The person from Siemens, who answered the call, was quite unpleasant. I asked her to tell her bosses that the Australians won’t allow Adani mine to happen.
