The Labor Party is still tying themselves in knots about Adani. They need to hear from us encouraging them to reject this polluting coal mine.

This is Labor’s Franklin River moment. This decision will go down in Australian environmental history. The ALP are so close, but we need to get them over the line.

Give them the courage and confidence to make the right decision!

Will you call one – or many! – of these key people in Labor's Cabinet and encourage them to make a clear public statement opposing this dangerous mine?

Calling tips

  • When you call, you might speak to a staffer. Ask them to leave a message for the Shadow Minister. If you can't get through, keep trying!
  • Be polite and encouraging – we want them to make a good decision!
  • Talk about why you care about this
  • Be specific – ask them to make a clear public statement opposing Adani's mine

I rang Bill Shorten’s office. Staffer said she would pass on the message and that they have received many calls today.

I called Bill Shorten’s office and spoke with Sandra who was polite and friendly. I discussed my opposition to the mine on the basis of Adani’s dodgy reputation. I also expressed concern for the traditional land owners who are opposed to the mine. The office was very busy taking calls so didn’t get a chance to talk about the threat to the Barrier Reef, unlimited water allocation or climate change in general.

Tried all. Tanya’s was busy but got through to voicemail; left message; was rung back! Caller was excellent, considering the huge bulk of angry calls must be getting. Pointed out that Shorten may have been taken out of context but his comments still leave way too much wiggle room :(

2 calls made so far.

First, i got through to Tanya Plibersek’s office. Spoke to Rachel who was receptive to my alarm at the news that ALP are reconsidering their stance on Adani. Rachel said Tanya always been clear about her views on Adani. I replied that was all the more reason for requesting a clear current statement on the ALP’s opposition to the Adani mine. She requested my email address so ‘Tanya could follow up’. Proactive and supportive manner.

Second, called Chris Bowen. Left message with Carol who was not forthcoming at all. She confirmed there would be discussions and at my request agreed to noting my alarm at a possible change of stance on Adani. Lukewarm manner. No offer of further information. Maybe due to being deluged by calls?
Will continue trying to contact other ALP shadow ministers listed.

Phoned the offices of Tanya Plibersek , Tony Burke and Bill Shorten. Positive responses, checked my key points had been noted by them. Stressed the dubious nature of Adani all round ( economically and environmentally) indicated clearly by worldwide banks’ ostracism. Applauded the (somewhat belated) review of Labor’s support for the project .Highlighted this would be a key difference between the 2 major parties and be a key factor in voting choices . I would switch completely to Greens if no change was forthcoming.

Hey ACF… there is apparently no-one from the Shadow Cabinet in Canberra this week because Cabinet isn’t sitting…or so I was told. My call to Mark Butler’s office almost rang out until a general staffer answered. She gave me his electorate office. (08) 82410190. Spoke to Steve who was confused about my call until he finally said “so you don’t like the Adani mine? None of us do…” I asked him to pass on my message to Mark and to ask him to please influence the other shadow ministers. I said: I live in Dickson and promise to campaign for ALP if you stop the mine. He liked the sound of that!
Rachel 2018-01-31 16:26:19 +1100
Chris Bowen’s office was polite, attentive and I think sympathetic to my message that Adani’s mine will be an environmental and economic disaster. His staffer took my name and phone & promised to forward my message. He also advised they have had “lots” of calls and emails today!

Called Bill Shortens Office and spoke to a staffer
She said Bill was shoring up his opinion on the Adani mine and was awaiting for further environmental reports
When I asked her if I could get an
Unequivocal commitment that Labor would not support the mine, she would only say it was unlikely

Mark Dreyfus whom I think knows me as a supporter-I said how concerned I was that ALP rorted to be changing position on Adani
Lady responds to report many calls in same vein today- & tried to say Bill did not quite mean that !
David 2018-01-31 16:23:51 +1100
Called Tanya Plibersek. Staffer who took the call said this is a misreporting and Ms Plibersek considers the Adani project does not stack up on environmental nor commercial grounds, noted that no commercial backer has come forward, and confirmed that the ALP will not extend a loan to the project via NAIF. She also confirmed the ALP’s support for renewable energy and their (in my view rather weak) target for renewable generation.
Stephen 2018-01-31 16:22:40 +1100
Tanya Plibersek, my local member. Was told “some misreporting was going on”. "Oh, fake news then?, I said. Spokesperson agreed. I trust that’s right!

I called Bill Shortens office regarding my concern and the call went well! I spoke with Tim and he mentioned that there had been a few of these callers expressing there concern. He ensured he was to pass my concerns onto Bill.

You need to ring the electorate offices I think. First 2 calls to Mark Butler & Jason Clare went through to Parliament House switch operator. She told me Parliament hasn’t resumed yet. I rang the electorate offices instead of the numbers on your list and spoke to someone in Mark Butler’s electorate Office and someone in Tony Burke’s electorate office. Both thanked me for my call and said they would pass on my message which is one of outrage over the whole sorry Adani mess. But in particular the promise to Adani of as much water as they want for free for 25 years whilst farmers pay through the nose for access to highly regulated water and pay whether they use it or not. I also reminded them that people are white hot over this issue and that Matt Canavan betrayed the govt’s. real position when he stepped down, saying that it had been a real honour to represent the Australian mining sector over the last year.
Noni 2018-01-31 16:18:04 +1100
Tanya’s office….I was told there had been some misinformation and the ALP are definitely not approving Adani!

I called Andrew Tanya’s Ps office said I was misinformed- Labour has not moved from their position and will not support the Adani mine. What is going on?
Renee 2018-01-31 16:15:47 +1100
Called Anthony Albanese and talked to Ken of his staff about how he could even consider this and the office said that yes he was considering the proposal if it stacked up. When I said I didn’t see how a coal mine could ever stack up environmentally even she laughed.
Emrita 2018-01-31 16:15:43 +1100
Tanya plibeseck…the office denied the reports and said that they had had quite a few calls!
Geraldine 2018-01-31 16:15:06 +1100
Tanya P office got secretary- she said they had a huge amount calls and that she was glad people were shouting about it because renewables are the way to go. She said his meaning was taken out of context and that they are looking at it closely and what they have seen so far doesn’t stack up. I said i couldn’t believe that they were still looking at it 3 years in and she said she takes my point? I said I was a big supporter of Tanya.

Bill Shorten’s Melbourne office, spoke to staffer who was polite and listened to my comments regarding Adani issue – I requested them to support the future of the reef, respect Indigenous land rights, listen to the Australian people and remember that Adani cannot be trusted. More phones were ringing in the background.
