The Labor Party is still tying themselves in knots about Adani. They need to hear from us encouraging them to reject this polluting coal mine.

This is Labor’s Franklin River moment. This decision will go down in Australian environmental history. The ALP are so close, but we need to get them over the line.

Give them the courage and confidence to make the right decision!

Will you call one – or many! – of these key people in Labor's Cabinet and encourage them to make a clear public statement opposing this dangerous mine?

Calling tips

  • When you call, you might speak to a staffer. Ask them to leave a message for the Shadow Minister. If you can't get through, keep trying!
  • Be polite and encouraging – we want them to make a good decision!
  • Talk about why you care about this
  • Be specific – ask them to make a clear public statement opposing Adani's mine

Bill Shorten, Tanya Plibersek
The personnel taking the calls were encouraging – saying that Labor were definitely ‘weighing up the economic costs’ and if it doesn’t ‘stack up’ then they won’t support it. I pointed out that the detrimental environment cost was perhaps even more important, and a clear public statement from Labor, coming clean and being on the side of the environment would garner them HUGE support. Anyway, I felt encouraged by their courtesy and encouragement…‘watch this space’, they said, ’we’ll be making a statement in the following weeks’.

Got throught to Tanya – the person who answered (eventually – so obviously there are many calls going throug!) was very gracioius – said mark Butler is against it environmentally – reiterated that is also what Bill said – took my full name and Gelibrand electorate – also knew there had been a text and email gone out – i emhasised as a grandmother the environmental cost not only to the reef – to all of us – climate change has no borders!
couldn’t get through to Albanese! engaged!

I called the office of Tanya Plibersek and my call was greeted with interest and thanks. The lady said she would definitely pass it on and that I was the grandfather who questioned the PM on Q&A about his support of Fossil Fuel projects. I also said that without Labor dropping their support of the Adani mine they have lost my vote!
Brian 2018-01-31 15:38:12 +1100
I only got through to Plibersek and Dreyfus’s office. Both assistants were polite. Dreyfus’s assistant enthused about how great it was that they had received hundreds of calls in the last few hours and expressed how thankful he was that people had taken the time to do this

I called Bill shorten. They said he does not make decisions for Qld.
I then called the premier Anastasia and they said that the mine has already been given approval since 2014! And that Anastasia has already written a letter tejecting a loan from Australia. So I’m not too sure what we are rushing to the phones for!!!!!

The staffer was very polite and well informed about the public concern. She said that Bill Shorten’s statement was taken out of context. Mark Butler has repeatedly claimed that Adani is not a project The Labour party supports and that they’re looking at strengthening their stance against it.

I rang Bill Shorten on 02) 6277 4022 and spoke to “Nelson” (who said that he wouldn’t give out his surname but said he was Bill Shorten’s secretary). I told him that I wanted Labour to " make a clear public statement opposing Adani’s mine". He tried to politely fob it off as a “Queensland issue” rather than a Labor issue but said he would pass my message onto Mr Shorten (who was travelling) Call made at ~3.30pm, Wednesday, 31/1/18

Called Plibersek, Bowen, Burke, Albanese, Butler, Neumann and Shorten.

Only Plibersek’s office answered after a very lengthy delay and said they had been bombarded with calls and took my dets. Seems like the message is getting through and staffer’s are avoiding the phone!
Karl 2018-01-31 15:27:26 +1100
Tanya Plibersek. Imogen answered. Was aware of the employment implications Adani vs Tourism Jobs on the Great Barrier Reef. Also, that Indian PM Modi does not want the coal, & wants to embrace the future of the planet using renewable energy. Overall, a good response.
John 2018-01-31 15:26:36 +1100
I spoke to a staff member at Bill Shorten’s office and expressed how important I feel it is to oppose the Adani mine . They said an announcement should be made within a week regarding the matter. Fingers crossed we get positive news!!
Fraser 2018-01-31 15:26:14 +1100
Tanya Plibersek’s office. Call was taken by a very pleasant assistant, who told me that Tony Burke says the mine will not be supported if they feel that it doesn’t stack up on environmental or economic grounds. I said that it is pretty clear that it doesn’t stack up environmentally and that, although I intend to vote Labor at the next election, I will not vote for any party that allows this mine to go ahead.
James 2018-01-31 15:25:42 +1100
Called a staffer in Bill Shortens office, I don’t think he had had other calls. I asked him to pass on my concerns about the Adani mine and asked ALP to keep the Qld ALP election promise and not support Adani Thanks
Sarah 2018-01-31 15:24:57 +1100
I called 6 on the list and got through to the offices of Chalmers, Dreyfus and Plibersek. All were polite and Pliberseks office in particular said that she supports Mark Butlers view that Adani does not stack up either economically or environmentally.
Sue 2018-01-31 15:24:04 +1100
Mr Shorten’s phone engaged. Ms Plibersek’s staffer very courteous and prepared to talk. I asked how a new coal mine could ever ‘stack up’ environmentally and wondered where large and powerful organisations such as the Labor Party got their information about environmental matters. Was reassured that the environment was a high priority for Labor and that they are just ‘looking at both sides’ and asking questions, which is their job. I agreed that it is their job to ask questions, and that meanwhile, new coal mines are not the right way to go. She was very approachable. I must make more calls about this sort of thing…
Tamsin 2018-01-31 15:23:05 +1100
Called Bill Shorten’s office. Spoke to a staffer. Told it was the QLD Labor cabinet that was meeting to reconsider. Agreed to pass on my message to Bill Shorten about why I oppose Adani.
