ACF Community Adelaide in partnership with the Rotary Club of Walkerville is inviting you to an information session on 'Bringing the Platypus Back to the Torrens'.
The Platypus has not been seen in the Torrens since the 1880s. Green Adelaide is leading a project to return the Platypus to the Torrens River.
Dr Liberty Olds from the Green Adelaide Platypus Team will be with us to inform us about the project and discuss ways that community groups can participate in this history making endeavour.
It is understood that there are three critical areas to get right before the first platypus is rehoused in the river.
1. What will they eat? Do the waters of the Torrens provide an adequate source of nutrition?
2. What do we need to do to reduce pollution? We are well aware of plastic and other visible polution but what else needs to be considered?
3. Is the vegetation on the bank suitable habitat thus enabling the platypus to avoid predators- foxes and dogs.
Green Adelaide has determined that it is likely that these matters can be managed. They are now interested in engaging with the public to discuss how the community help address any shortcomings.
Reestablishing the platypus in a former habitat, the Torrens, will play an important part in ensuring that the platypus retains a permanent position among the unique Australian fauna.
People attending will include members of Rotary Clubs, Australian Conservation Foundation supporters and schools along the river.
A maximum of 40 people so if you wish to attend don't hesitate to register. Drinks and food can be purchased at the bar.
Parking is generally available on sidestreets off Melbourne St if not on Melbourne St itself or public transport by bus from city to Stop 4 Melbourne St.
Following this event, if you are inspired to spot a platypus then sign up for a Warrawong visit on Saturday the 23rd of September for a customised ACF tour of Warawong including some of DR John Wamsleys original sanctuary.
These two upcoming events are organised as part of ACF's Platy Project 2023.
The recording of the online of the Platy Project launch held on Thursday 31st of August is designed to whet your appetite regarding all things platypus. This one-hour recording will be a fantastic preparation for your search for a platypus this September. You'll hear from platypus researchers and campaigners to get fully inspired to get out into nature and help protect this incredible creature.
