Get ready now for the Aussie Backyard Bird Count in October with ACF Adelaide. We are offering a chance to gear up with apps, background knowledge and practice, ready to make your contribution to citizen science.
We’ve chosen the award winning Felixstow Reserve alongside Karrawirra Pari (River Torrens). The Reserve is a redevelopment of a bland mown green desert into a wetland. It forms part of a greater aquifer storage and recovery scheme which provides stored water used in over 18 local parks and gardens.
This event is experiential. There will be two activities run concurrently then repeated so that you can attend both if you wish. Join Pam White and learn about birds of the area while Tim Boote will explore bird observation skills and combine them with phone apps to help you identify them.
The event is aimed at people new to observing birds. It’s about having a go, learning what you might need to practice, and discovery of online tools that will help you in your observations. Through this experience and we hope, subsequent practice, you’ll be able to launch yourself into the Aussie Backyard Bird Count week equipped to make your own contribution to this important work.
On the day we’ll be using Birdlife’s Aussie Bird Count app (link below). If you can, install it before the event to save time.
I’m new and know nothing about birds, can I attend?
That’s the idea! This is a chance to meet other ACF supporters and develop bird observations skills that can contribute to scientific knowledge.
For Families
Felixstow Reserve has fitness/climbing equipment, sculptures, basketball net, table tennis table and natural areas for exploration and adventures! There are areas of open water.
Toilets
Felixstow Reserve has accessible toilets. There are more distant accessible toilets at Klemzig Bus Interchange and at Drage Reserve.
Accessibility
The reserve is serviced by accessible paths that join the main Torrens / Karrawira Pari accessible path network. There are many areas for seating, some shaded.

What to bring
- Water and a snack (there are water fountains on site)
- Sun block
- A hat
- A waterproof jacket
- Your smart phone and reading glasses.
- Pen and paper
- Binoculars
- Sturdy shoes and perhaps long pants for the long grass or water margins
- Your old school bird ID book if you have one.
- Your fancy camera.

- Klemzig O-Bahn Interchange bus services then a walk along the river to Felixstow Reserve.
- W90 to Langman Grove
Parking
There is a small car park on the eastern tip of the reserve. Langman Grove bordering the reserve has single yellow lines. Many of the surrounding residential streets have no parking restrictions.
