Monthly Meeting – Tuesday 11th June 2024

Our special guest, Martin Pritchard from Environs Kimberley, will let us know what is happening in the Kimberley and how we can get involved to protect this precious region.

From Martin

The Kimberley in WA’s north is a tourism icon. It’s one of those places that has yet to be tarnished by industrialisation, urbanisation, and large-scale land clearing. It has the largest, most intact tropical savannah anywhere in the world. It’s the last bastion for many of Australia’s unique animals and harbours healthy populations of the Greater Bilby and Freshwater Sawfish, which have largely disappeared from other parts of the country.

Despite its global significance, the Kimberley is under threat from the oil and gas industry. Plans are afoot to carry out large-scale fracking in the Martuwarra Fitzroy River catchment to pipe gas to the Pilbara.

Martin Pritchard from Environs Kimberley has been working to hold back the industrialisation of the Kimberley for 15 years. Come and hear what’s being planned and how to get involved to protect our precious Kimberley.
